Dumpjack, what are your thoughts so far?

I'm actually running experiments while I've been downloading and uploading so I haven't had a chance. I'm just about to put it on now, so I'll post my thoughts shortly.

the drums and bass on "Heart In A Cage" slay. galloping, almost Iron Maiden-ish.

And I agree! I'm liking what I hear so far.

I really liked You Only Live Once.

I guess it's their Stephin Merritt mock-up.

Worst chorus he's ever written though.

He sounds like he's going for Shane McGowan on Evening Sun. Cripes. I like this song though.

Overall, this is going to need a few more listens. I like what I've heard. (standouts for me are You Only Live Once, Heart in A Cage, Juicebox) A couple of songs go on a bit too long for me. I think On the Other Side and Vision of Division would have been better off a minute shorter.

Fortuitiously, I was just listening to Is This It yesterday afternoon and what I liked about those songs is that they got in yr head quickly, the song was over before it overstayed its welcome and you wanted another, and lo and behold there was another hooky track waiting for you. What I didn't like about Room on Fire was the number of mid-tempo tracks that sort of meandered for me. This album has a few too many of those as well, but I didn't get bored and want to turn it off, so that's a plus. Again, needs some more listens to fully appreciate. Also, I was listening on my laptop, which isn't the best way to hear something.

what's everyone else think?

I haven't listened to this yet, but do yourself a favor and re-listen to Room on Fire -- best album this decade, methinks.

it's a good album, not fantastic. i'm sort of disappointed. I like that they are tinkering with their sound though. but strong strokes songs are like the best songs in the world, and about half of the album is that way.

As most of our musical tastes seem to jive, and I respect yr opinions, I will do this and look for what I might be missing. Fuck if I didn't WANT to like this album. Maybe it was when I was doing thesis shit and I wasn't thinking straight. Who fuckin' knows, but I'll spin it again and give it another go and let ya'll know.

it feels like a grower to me though. their second album felt the same way at first, and now i consider it a classic release.

their tinkerings and the production are aces. good to see them pushing their own sound in different directions, and not biting anything.

Is that you think, first impression wise? I just wish it was shorter, that's my gut reaction.
