Took off early this morning to get some lab work done (doc wants to make certain that I've not become a diabetic). Gave blood, peed in a cup...no big deal. On my way home, called my mom to ask if she'd like to go out for breakfast. Got the answering machine. Hmmm...odd, she didn't say she was going anywhere. Thinking she had walked over to the neighbours who are having a yard sale, I thought nothing of it.

I get home around 11am and find her asleep still. Problem is, I can't rouse her. She finally opens her eyes and looks at me odd, as if I were an apparition, tries to speak and nothing but mumbling comes out. My dad died of a massive stroke, so I'm immediately thinking...HOLY FUCK, SHE'S HAD A STROKE! I continue trying to revive her, hoping she gains some sort of consciousness and all I get is half mumbles and grunts. Noticing that she's drenched in sweat, I get her to sit up -- yo, Mom, let's test your blood sugar level (she's a long term diabetic, hence, the reasons why I'm having lab work done). After 10 attempts of trying to get a reading, we learn that it's 61 -- very low. Her signs are that of someone going into a diabetic shock. After stuffing a bit of food and milk in her, she finally gained lucidity.

Whew!

She's sleeping now, said she barely slept all night. And, once her system has a bit of time to absorb the food she's eaten, I'm gonna check her sugar level again.

I tell ya, living with an invalid is not easy. And guess who is gonna start watching her diet a bit more closely -- I don't wanna end up like her.

I'm a little freaked out right now. Forgive my rant.

Jesus, Tania. That's pretty freaky. How's she doing now? And you for that matter?

Just checked on her and she got miffed with me. "I've not slept yet!!" Then, why are you snoring? "Ohhh...sorry." I'll check on her in about 30 minutes.

*sigh*

Ever since my mom found out she was a diabetic a few years ago I've tried to be careful with my diet. There is a history of diabetes in our family, and I'm constantly scared of developing it so I know how you feel.

You're an angel for looking after your mom, Tania. You will be rewarded for all you've done and sacrificed.

I dunno if 61 is low enough to account for all those symptoms. Is she better now?

It's gotten low before. She's usually really good about eating when she needs to and checking her sugar levels. I've a feeling that due to the fact that she hadn't eaten all night nor had any breakfast, led to the low level.

wow. VERY scary. i'm glad she's okay.

my aunt has severe diabetes.
and she's actually in the hospital right now.....

she bumped her leg last weekend and, i don't know all the technicalities, but the diabetes has impeded her legs ability to heal and has a might bad infection. this is the second time this has happened to her.

the doc says that if this happens a 3rd time....she will likely lose her leg.

diabetes. scary, scary stuff.

glad to hear you caught that, type 2 runs in our family, I am personally familiar with those low sugar symptoms, but haven't needed any meds , only watching the diet for now, but yeah, shaky, sweats, faintness and the desire to eat 3 candybars in a row in about a minute's time

Quit allowing her to bump her leg.

Seriously.

The best to you and yours.

This is reason #465 why I've forbid my parents from getting old.
