Harpo Speaks!

So far - 3 chapters in - and it is an extremely entertaining read that is surprisingly though-proviking, as well.

Already it has me pondering the nature of celebrity and how talented people discover their talents.

Harpo idolized his older brother Chico, who was very good at doing impressions. But Harpo had a high, squeaky voice, so he learned to ape other people's PHYSICAL mannerisms, as opposed to their voices.

Little anecdotes have much larger questions and issues underneath. And it's fascinating... so far. Like I said, I am only 3 chapters in.

Good stuff, though.

One of the great things about Christmas is they usually run all the Marx brother films at 8.30am or some other odd time which only seems to highlight further there genius.

It's probably been 20 years since I read Harpo Speaks--it's fascinating. Groucho's books are great reads, too; pick up The Groucho Letters if you ever get a chance. It's amazing the range of people they knew.

I'm a bit of a sucker for that Algonquin Round Table kinda stuff; really enjoyed a George S. Kaufman bio I found at a flea market a few years ago.

I just pre-ordered a copy of my friend Brook's book (shameless plug):

I'll probably end up reading the whole thing in one sitting.

FYI: I know her long before she was a stripper.

I started Tales for Transformation by Goethe. I like it a whole lot, so far.
