They cover the freaking KINKS.
On more than one album.

That's Van Halen for you.
They had respect for the craft of songwriting.
The chops to put a new spin on some classics and write a few of their own.
And a frontman in Diamond Dave to make it an entertaining show.

Damn, I wish they would bury the hatchet and put out another classic.

Friends of mine saw DLR with a diesel backing band last summer at the Naperville Rib Fest (yeah, that's right) and said they were fucking ON FIRE good. Basically did every Van Halen and DLR classic (except for Yankee Rose) one after another.

We'll probably never see it though (then again, maybe the Diamond one will also finally come out of the closet one of these days)

While I think Van Halen has their place, I seriously doubt anything they'll put out in the future will be considered a "classic." Their time as a respectable band has passed, now they can only live on through their many die-hard fans.

I vehemently disagree. There is substance there.

That was my point with this whole thread, Cap'n.
I just think the substance disappeared with Diamond Dave.

I thought you ruined the board. Now yr saving it too? Perfect homeostasis, I guess.

I think Dave's VH days have enough to qualify them as classic.

I disagree -- the songs from around For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge include some real gems. Case in point, "Poundcake".

I mean, just listen to Live Without A Net.

I had a roommate in college who listened to that album pretty frequently. It was just so-so. Not a dud, but nothing next to the early stuff (to sound like the snob that I am). Actually, I think that OU812 was a better album, for songs like whatever that country-ish thing was with Eddie doing the chicken pickin'. That was a pretty cool song.

Not saying there wasn't the occasional gem. But for the most part, the downhill descent was steep and swift once Dave was gone.

I definitely think they've had classic stuff but I don't think they'll be putting out any more "classics" especially not with Diamond Dave. Of course my definition of classic and others may differ.

Everything they put out after Roth left is pretty much garbage.

I'm going to agree with this for the most part. It's where VH starting going into rapid decline and jumped the shark for good.

eddie = great guitarist; the rest of 'em = meh

put out some good albums, but i'd only put vh in a hof for eddie's great guitar gymnastics and good keyboarding. (did he ever play drums on a vh record? that's how he started out...)

i heard very similarly, that this was an awesome show. and i don't think the person is a huge DLR/VH fan.

Come on, any band that Gene Simmons signs and records, has to be qual.

quintessential clown.

didn't see him in his heyday, but saw him this last summer & he just came off as a big chauvenist oaf schmuck screaching "wow!" and doing his helicopter leg kick in every song. bung.

That was meant tongue in cheek. Yeah, Simmons records was a joke. VH was a gift from god to him, although I don't know that I dig them as much as I may have once casually listened to them. They certainly didn't shape my upbringing, but then I guess I'm slightly too young to be of that timeframe of VHmania.
