so a friend of mine sent me a cd by a band called the Fakers. Know anything about them? He sent me this blank cd, with no song titles or album names, but I do know there's a song on there called "Fucking the Exhibits."

They seem alright, nothing overtly distinctive, but thought I'd get your take on 'em.

honestly ive never heard them, the name rings a bell somewhat, but that may just be because its not a very distinct name.

RIYL? Are they from round here or something?

Based on your recommendation I bought Shihad's first album, "Killjoy" and it's a monster. Thanks for the tip.

Cat Empire have a Ska/Squeeze(surprise)Ozomatli/311 sort of sound, but great breaks
The song I listened to at their site has a line, "met a guy named juan"-bam--the whole band goes into a salsa beat for couple of bars..awesome

the Cat Empire get lots and lots of airplay here, and i hate them. A lot. But seriously, i hate the shit out of them. Their latest record was recorded in Havanna or some shit.

Dnorwood, are you thinking of the band called Faker, rather than The Fakers? They're an Aussie band, but i haven't heard much from them in a while. Their latest album is called Pushing the Senses i think (one of my friends is into them and i recall seeing it on her cd rack).

a brief search unveiled their website: http://www.faker.com.au/

And i second what splates and south pacific said about Shihad. Those older albums are fucking balls out monsters.

Splates are you going to BDO? Fast Crew & Scribe bro.
acts that have me interested:
Iggy & the Stooges
Franz Ferdinand
Gerling
The Go! Team
Vitalic
Common
Shihad
Beasts of Bourbon
Sarah Blasko
Bit by Bats

this has kinda made me wanna go a little bit more:

Quote:
BIG DAY OUT organisers regret to bring you the news that Californian hardcore band AFI will no longer be journeying to Australia for the 2006 BIG DAY OUT.

The band are currently in the studio working on their new album which is running late and is now not due for completion until next year. Plans for touring have consequently been put on hold.

The BIG DAY OUT is currently considering options for a replacement, so stay tuned.

And while we're talking about music from 'round these parts, does anyone know anything about the next Avalanches record? It was initially scheduled for release about 3 years ago...

[EDIT:] awww Scribe's not coming to BDO... :-([/quote]

Yep im pretty much just going because of the Stooges, anything else is a bonus. And you can add Frontline to the list of crap NZ hip hop, if they havent invaded your country yet, theyre probably on the way - be warned.

Vitalic is australian only, fuck that shit.

Edit: Wolfmother are going, whats your opinion of them? Ive heard good things about them, but havent heard them myself

Wolfmother are so-so. To me, they are in the same category as bands like Jet or the Killers; popular acts who some people with actual taste like, but most couldn't give two shits about. It's taken them like 3 years from their first successful EP to even put out an LP (which just contains songs from that EP anyway), which i think shows that they're struggling a bit. They'll probably (inevitably) do well in America sooner or later.

They have really big sounding songs, but they all end up sounding like Kashmir by Zepellin anyway. And by watching their filmclips it's really obvious that they have 'stylists' wrapping those scarves round their necks.

That's it... Faker it is. I listened to their latest on the way in to work today. It's not bad, but it sounds like so many other different bands. Like parts of the album reminded me of old Cure, another part kinda the lead singer's voice reminded of Billy Bragg. Like I said, the album's good, but nothing really remarkable.

Although many people will tell you it was video, don't believe them. That's a myth propagated by the RIAA. In truth, the murderer was Brian Ferry. High on a dangerous cocktail of fame and sex (and cocaine), he repeatedly stabbed it 15 times in sucession so that his New Romantic progeny might be successful.
