I am intrigued by this, wouldn't mind your own personal perspective.

The headline would be: "ambient electronic producer decides to incorporate acoustic elements"

This album is just extremely beautiful. It is very much in line with Brian Eno's idea of music being like perfume or wallpaper. While there are definitely melodies within it, the record is more of a cycle of various themes.

It is very delicate, dark and sparkly; not unlike Bjork's "Vespertine" but sans Bjork's vocals.

I will probably list it as my #1 for this year, in large part due to the fact that it was exactly the kind of album I felt like listening to for a lot of the year. But I don't want to over-rate it and ruin it for you... it is quite subtle. You should just give it a listen. :)

Can you set us up, Polly?

It seems like something I'll either love or hate.

Listening to this now, it's pretty good actually. Don't think it'll be top 20 or anything, but it's def a good Stoner Metal album and an enjoyable listen.

I think it's worth mentioning here, for those that didn't see it elsewhere, that Earth Hex: Or Printing in the Infernal Method needs to be considered before you finalize your '05 list.

Let's keep this love flowing.

Fruit Bats - Spelled In Bones

Great stuff. RIYL Stars, Magic Numbers, Stephen Merritt.

Might crack my Top 10.

I see he's got this album (EP? mini-album?) and a full 15-track disc, Fancy Barrel that came out in October. Is the latter a reissue or second '05 release, and which should I reeeally be grabbing?

Oky-doky, will do.

You should hear Delia Gonzalez & Gavin Russom's The Days of Mars, this is quickly zooming up my list. Very reminiscent of old school Tangerine Dream (early golden era, not pre-golden sequencer- and arpegiator-less acid era).

Not that it's unheard of, but more like unheard from: where is Hypermagic Mountain going to fit into some of these lists? Rarely have I heard a word mentioned of this latest Lightning Bolt piece, and I have my theory why: there has been a progression from Ride The Skies through Wonderful Rainbow to the current piece from 'spotty affair with equal parts transcendent and quirky moments' to 'solid flat affair with few standout moments'. Wonderful Rainbow was the happy medium.

'Hypermagic Mountain' will almost certainly be in my Top Twenty and possibly even my Top Ten.

I agree that 'Wonderful Rainbow' is the stronger album though.

I've yet to hear 'Ride The Skies'.

Both are 2005 releases, and both are excellent. I'd grab the EP "Early As the Trees" first, and then move onto "Fancy Barrel".

Another singer/songwriter release you people should look into...

Paul Duncan - Be Careful What You Call Home

"In a time of wordy music/ Ba ba ba ba ba ba ba"

Lyric of the month, easily. And Paul Duncan is true to his word, keeping the yakking to a minimum throughout Be Careful What You Call Home, instead allowing his voice to mingle with the other instruments as just another useful wave-form. In fact, this album is so subtle that the first time you listen to it, it barely registers, like a ghost whisper or a beige amongst browns. But it leaves you with a pleasant sensation and sucks you back for more spins, and by the third or fourth time through, it's difficult not to be hooked on its blend of pastoral beauty and electronic abstraction.

As the album develops its gently experimental approach, Jim O'Rourke and Fridge spring to mind as good comparison points, and like them Duncan's drum sound warrants its own little mention as a thing of rare beauty. The rest of the sonic palette is comprised of Rhodes, bass, glockenspiel, strings, and other soft things that sound great put up against the boom of the drums, which Duncan chops into new shapes as he sees fit. Duncan's voice is a soft and tuneful tenor that slides into that texture as if on a river of Vaseline.

Order it directly from the label: www.home-tapes.com

Being that Vespertine is one of my all time favorites, had to check out the album.

I like it. Very minimal. dark and sparkly sounds right.

Just got today... have listened to it five times already...

Beautiful work... will be in my top 5 at least for the year...

From the school of Miles (timbre, composition)... but with a landscape of psyches, textures and rhythms ripe for the oughts. Lost in space, found at a search party. And more Budd than his previous work.
