Good thread.

I’m going to vote for my former home, San Francisco, and give it a solid 10.

The thing that was really amazing about SF was that people genuinely got into the music there. I think because it’s such a transient place with a new influx of people all the time it kept things fresh. So if the music was groovy and made you want to dance, it seemed, the majority of people would get into it and dance.

I looked forward to going to concerts because some of the venues (Great American, Bimbo’s, and Fillmore) have to be some of the best in the world. If a band only played like four shows in the US than they stop by SF, as that was never a problem.

The bands right now are pretty average Velvet Teen, John Vanderslice*, Her Space Holiday, Vue, and Donnas (40 miles away). A bunch have moved to LA like Brian’s Jonestown, BRMC or broken up Beulah.

I loved LA venues as well and look forward to going to shows again but I hate to drive after being able to take a cab home from anywhere in SF for seven dollars. I would rank LA a 9 because of the hipster aspect and not being able to go to the Whisky anymore, what’s up with that?

*Better than average, I would say really good.

For the kind of music I like...

Honolulu - a big zero. Coincidentally, This wasn't an option in your poll.

I give Lincoln a four and Omaha a six. Lincoln has some excellent local bands many of them with Saddle Creek ties. It is home to Presto! studios which has recorded some decent indie albums and most of the essential SC albums. It lacks a large indie rock club and a major venue to book the heavy hitters, the 8,000 seat arena that is here is run down and poorly operated by SMG.
Omaha has more widely known bands, a tremendous indie rock venue and a great booking company 1% Productions. Both places lack a decent number of clubs and none of the big tours come through here unless they are basically old established bands making a farewell or are Country groups. The new Qwest Center in Omaha is massive and a tremendous large scale venue and they still have the MAC and Civic open too.

The two biggest shows coming up for the scene are Bright Eyes on January 14th and Modest Mouse on March 1st. Low is also stopping by Omaha in March, and I don't believe they have came before.

I'd give Houston a 4. I think it has the same problem as Atlanta in that most of the artsy kids move to Austin (Athens in the case of the ATL) and form bands there. Couple of decent venues. Couple of decent local bands that I can think of. No good record shops.

I lived in Pittsburgh for quite some time. Things vary a lot there from time to time in terms of the frequency of touring bands playing there. But I liked the local scene there, and it has a couple of good record shops. So, I'd give it a 6 or 7.

I give Toronto a 10, right now the last few years have been great for local/Canadian music, and the concerts that have come though the last little while have been great - too great, I can't even begin to afford them all.

the local scene in Atlanta sucks ass, but you get the best National/World acts there are. Atlanta often gets the only Southern play for good bands. I give Atlanta a 6 only because the local scene is so terrible (with the exception of Dirty South rap).

It's true that Atlanta is the token stop in the South for major tours, but I don't see that as any reason to cut it's "music scene" any slack. Out of the 4 or 5 venues here that I actually like, only 2 ever have good shows more than once or maybe twice a year, if that. Of those 2, The Earl leaves you thoroughly permeated with smoke, and the Variety Playhouse is expensive (not to mention the fact that it mostly books the same acts perennially).

The other places that get good shows among the smaller venues - The Echo Lounge and The Drunken Unicorn - are just shitty places IMO. A lot of people may disagree with me about the Echo (it's really just the layout that annoys me), but I think the Unicorn is widely accepted as being crappy. It's nowhere near as cool as seeing bands on the MJQ main floor which apparently doesn't happen anymore.

I totally agree about the actual local music scene here. Even the Dirty South thing has gotten big enough to not really be any more accessible locally than it is anywhere else. Pretty much anybody who starts out in Atlanta leaves once they start to make it or get a fanbase outside the city. I think Of Montreal was originally from here, and now they won't even play here anymore. Prefuse 73 gives props to Atlanta/ Decatur, but he didn't stick around long after getting big.

Maybe a 4 is harsh. I dunno.

I think you are seriously devaluing the importance of the Atlanta hip-hop scene. Usher,Outkast, Little Jon, and Ludacris are some of the hottest acts in hiphop and everybody wants to record with them. And they do. In Atlanta. L.A. Reid is the president of a major label. Thigh High (Jermaine Dupree) is one of the great hit makers of the past 15 years. Even shit like the Eastside Boyz, Goody Mobb is nationally known. Outside of New York, Atlanta is the hiphop capital of America.

The local rock scene is a little more disjointed. Of Montreal is actually from Athens and there as always been a thing with Athens bands (particularly Elephant 6) playing in Atlanta. Why, I don't know. I think there is a healthy, if understated rock/punk/indie scene. Atlanta is actually one of the easier big cities to actually get gigs in if you are unknown which helps.

In addition to the hiphop recording scene there are also tons of great studios. Think Brendan O'Brian.

Your criticism of venues is basically just whiney, crybaby bullshit. Oh you don't like the layout? Its smokey? BooHoo--ITS A FUCKING ROCK CONCERT! The only legitimate complaint I would have is that the sound is a little loud at Echo Lounge; other than that I consider all of the Atlanta venues to be above average in ticket price, service, and sound qualty. I'd also add that I think The Tabernacle and The Fox are on par with any venue in the country, bar none.

Finally, Atlanta's proximity to Athens (its about an hours drive) is great for the scene. Athens: REM, Widespread, Drive By Truckers, Elephant 6 etc etc.

You live in a better scene than you think, dude---you just insist on making everything a negative.

I give Atlanta a 7 or 8.

Austin -

Acts = 10. I mean, we are "the live music capital of the world", right? Everyone plays here, save bands booked by Marsha Vlasic. I'm told she hates Charles Attal - and he books just about everything in this town. So, no Muse, no Strokes, etc.

It's probably safe to assume I'm the only person on this board that knows who the hell you're talking about. Marsha books Elvis Costello, but he played ACL Fest this year, as you know.
