Been to several shows alone. Not the worst thing in the world.

Been to TONS of movies by myself. LOVE IT!

Don't worry about it. Take the plunge.

The only people I really know here are from law school (and I haven't seen most them in long time since we all graduated), so I've been to lots of shows alone. It's a little awkward in-between bands sometimes (if you're a bit shy, like me), but it's better than the feeling of kicking yourself for not going at all.

And actually, I usually feel really good after going alone, just because it means I didn't pussy out.

My advice --> go for it. And, if you're daring, spot another solo person and talk to 'em.

just do it. i've done it a few times and definitely will do it again. i got tired of friends flaking on me, or lagging- so i just sucked it up and started going by myself. some of my friends were like "what? you're going by yourself?" and i just tell them whatever, i'm not missing a band i want to see because you don't want to go. why let that bother you?

the only part that does kinda suck is in between sets, but usually i go out for a smoke or grab a drink at the bar. and it's easier for you to meet people if you're a chick by yourself (you appear less intimidating).

funny thing is, i never could go to a movie by myself... and i've missed out on a lot of movies this way.

I used to go to shows alone all the time, but not as many lately, since live with some broad. In any case, go to the damned show. At the worst you'll see a band you like. At best some guy will get crushed next to you and after a small riot you'll end up in some bar with the most beautiful girl you've ever seen with cognac. or so I've learned from experience.

i was gonna say something about you people needing to drink more, but i guess that's kind of redundant with my posts at this point.

Have been to way more shows alone than with people. Saw every star room boys show that was in or near athens for about 5 years (roughly 40), and went to all but like 3 of them alone. You get a beer, you pay attention, you stand wherever the hell you want, and You're ready, you go home. No voting, no asking permission, no nothing.

Play by your own rules, baby.

Stacey, I'm in the same boat. I feel uncomfortable going to shows by myself. I too need to get out of my comfort zone and just do it.

Going to shows alone isn't the best, but it's better than not going and regretting it later.

<---regrets missing a lot of recent shows

yeah, i don't know... i figure people would be like "oh look at that lonely girl by herself," then again, i'm just weird like that. i should try it sometime i guess.

as far as shows go, i totally don't mind. if people give me shit about going alone, i'm like, hey at least i have balls and i play by my own rules. and since this is la, i generally run into people i know at shows anyway.

The only thing that keeps me from going to more shows by myself is the hour drive to Detroit. I've got no problems with it, and actually enjoy it because I can do whatever the hell I want (go early, leave early, sit wherever, etc.).
Plus, people inevitably want the dude in the wheelchair to have a good time, so they come up and start talking, get out of my way so I can get to the front of the stage and so on.

Shows I've been to solo this year: New Pornographers, LCD Soundsystem/MIA, Bob Mould, Raveonettes, The Hard Lessons, Destiny's Child, Beck

Same here. Its not like I talk to my roommates or friends during the movie, and the movie discussion afterward would consist of

Friend: "What did you think?"
Me: "I liked it. Thought it was good."

There's a show I'd like to go on on Thursday, but I know none of my friends will go with me. Considering they aren't really receptive to "my music", I should really get over the going alone thing.

I just found my list of "upcoming shows" and realized I missed all of them because I had no one to go with. I'm just a gigantic pussy, aren't I? This must be remedied.

i missed a bunch of cool stuff between oct/nov for this primary reason.

I think it's just more fun to go with people you know. I either end up exchanging "wow that rocked!" glances or talking tons of shit about the band with said friends.

I can't do that alone. It'd look weird.

i've gone to a couple of shows by myself. truthfully, it's not all that fun...but for certain bands, it's worth it.

You usually end up watching the movie by yourself anyway (and if you don't, I don't want to watch a movie with you), so why not.

As to shows: most venues in this area are in crappy neighborhoods. I don't mind being at shows alone, but it's getting to and fro I don't like.

I've gone to some alone, but also prefer going with friends. For me it's also going to depend on the venue.

I used to go to movies alone a lot as I used to be a pretty hardcore film "buff". I like it because I can sit whereever I want, which is usually way up in the front. My girlfriend likes the back.

On the other hand, I would never go to a restaurant alone. At least not one where they have waiters and menus at your table.

Well you are what you eat

I've gotten so I don't even ask friends anymore. I used to get burned all the time by fencesitters where I'd either wait for a decision and the show would sell out, or I'd buy and get stuck with an extra tickets and then they'd tell me that they didn't want to go. So I just buy a ticket for myself for most shows and let my friends know what I've got tickets to in case they want to join me. This works fine as long as its not a sitdown venue with assigned seats, and I generally avoid those shows anyway. Weekend shows are a different story unless its someone I really want to see. I'd rather hang with friends elsewhere on a weekend than go alone to a show.

And I don't see it being awkward at all being at a show or a movie alone. Its not like you can really or should really talk much during the show anyway.

I've never gone to a concert or movie alone. I've missed so many bands I've been dying to see because I've had nobody to go with. Most recently, Eels earlier this year.

I get pissed off but I think I'd be bored and uncomfortable all night by myself. I have no problem going shopping or to the library by myself but movies and concerts, I'd just feel like too much of a loser.

That would be just the "soap opera" twist we'd need to make it really interesting.
