What are the odds that the Mariners actually do something this offseason.

I've heard runours of Beltre...

As long as they get someone i'll be happy. Someone that can bting some discussion and hope. I gladly watched them lose many games last and will gladly watch them lose more as long as they make an effort to improve.

Overpay for Beltre or even better overpay for beltran.

get pavano and i'll still watch....lose pavano and get clement.

something please.

mariners need a lot of help. Beltran would be a start. I'm a Giants fan - hope the Giants can get some more pitching help.

Greater than the Padres actually doing something. We can't even resign a 42 year old pitcher.

nice avatar duckyboy.

red sox fan wha? moment of the week: gammons reporting that $8M (with an incentive for $13M if he makes more than 30 starts) for Boomah Wells. they guy has never pitched well in Fenway. that plus the rest of the package has me wondering what, if any, realistic chances they have for signing Pavano.

the wells signing was a bad one. and on espn this morning, they said that the orioles offered pavano a sweet deal, although I don't know the details.

actually, looks like the numbers i saw earlier are off by a good 5M! well...if they re-sign petey, they're essentially exchanging Wells for Lowe in the number 3 spot, which i can totally get down with. the Sox really are scared of multi-year contracts right now...

Why would you want Pavano?

Explain yourself. Why wouldn't you want him? He's a good young pitcher with proven playoff experience.

I'd much rather pay $10-11 million/year for him than $7 million for Jaret Wright, $8 million for Eric Milton, $8 million for Kris Benson, or $14-15 million for Pedro.

He's supposedly making a decision today. Redsox are thought to be unlikely to spend on both him and Pedro. I heard a rumor he's going to Yankees for 4 years & $42.5 million, but I'm skeptical that he's not just using them to push the price up.

He's had one good season. Doesn't seem like a good bet to me for that sort of deal.

Sort of like Adrian Beltre...

Also, for 8 million guaranteed, I don't want Wells back. Hope that back holds up!

Beltre's had more than one, but 2004 was his first since 2000. But yes, him too.

Finally.

Now if they can get Beltre, resign Villone and grab a middle of the raod starter they may have something resembling an MLB team this year.

With Spade not here, who will talk White Sox with me?

I, for one, liked the Carlos Lee trade... ((cricket chirp))

What aspects? I think if Podsednik can return to and improve on his rookie campaign then you might have something. Vizcaino is very underrated as a bullpen guy and i think his stuff is great, however it's tough to get the kind of power, average, and speed combo players like Lee.

Time will tell but i think the Brewers really solidified their power. Jenkins, Overbay and Lee should help improve their offense quite a bit and inserting a more consistent leadoff man will help. OBP is key.

Cowley wrote a piece in the Trib today painting a picture of Carlos being the most selfish player on the team. Telander has also backed this story up... I'm not sure why the sports writers always have to knock a player when he leaves, but this seems like cause for concern. Supposedly, not one Sox player was upset when they heard Lee was traded. Many say that Maggs was his only friend in the clubhouse... which didn't help his case either. His defense improved a ton... but they said he didn't listen to coaches by shading hitters and that a lot of doubles could have been outs had he positioned himself in the OF the way the coaches asked him to.

Pods gives us a leadoff hitter and speed... which is the look the Sox are going for now.

he batted .244 last year. hard to utilize speed when you can't get on base.

I'm in agreement with DHRJericho and robotboy, I'd much rather have Lee than Podsednik. Not an awful move, since they also got the homer-happy pitcher, but I think the Brewers will win this one.

Some actual backup info:

Podsednik
Age Next Season: 29
2004: .244/.313/.364
2003: .314/.369/.443

Lee
Age Next Season: 28 (turns 29 in June)
2004: .305/.366/.525
2003: .291/.331/.499
2002: .264/.359/.484

Even Podsednik's very good 2003 was comparable to Lee's non-2004 seasons. I don't expect Lee to repeat 2004, but if Podsednik was really as good as he showed in 2003, wouldn't he had made the majors before he was 27? Granted, Podsednik plays a tougher defensive position, so if you expected Podsednik to always hit like 2003, and Lee to always hit like pre-2004, then Podsednik is the better player, but I don't think that's likely (on Podsednik's end).

That was very long-winded.

Vizcaino has had some good years and good strikeout numbers, but he gives up a lot of homers, so we'll have to wait and see.

He did and STILL stole 70 bases. Imagine what he'll do at Comiskey. The simple fact is, if they spend the money saved on a good starting pitcher, this is a great trade.

I'll probably get punched with all the Chicagoians (is that what you guys like to be called?) but I think that finally, this will be the Cardinals year. In fact, you can't convince me otherwise.

Yeah, and scored a whooping... 85 runs.
