So, not to step on Shmoo's polls or any of the other inevitable year end activities that I'm sure only list freaks like us Obnish will be paricipating in: Vote on the Best Song of 2004 using only the options above. THIS IS NOT AN OPPORTUNITY FOR YOU TO EXERCISE "WRITE-IN" VOTES". Just vote for one of the songs dammit.

I'll hold off my vote for a bit.

You got me there partner....I abhor the words "Best" and "Great". Sorry.

But thanks for voting; These may not be the "Best" but they were the 4 that came out of a paricularly heated argument between myself and the Senator last night.

My vote btw goes for "Your Covers Blown" A song that I openly never get tired of.

How do you have a heated discussion over which of 4 completely different songs is the best?

Completely different? I guess that makes some sense, but music is music, man. These were the four songs that we decided were the 4 best of the year, we listened to them, scared our houseguests, and debated their individual merits.

I guess I just see them as songs; implied stylistic differences aside, I mean they're all Rock and Roll songs, right?

I may be in the minority, but I think "Portland, Oregon" sucks and promptly hit skip when it shits itself in my playlist.

That said, I voted for DBT, cause I'm avoiding any responsibilities like a motherfucker so I can go on Thursday night.

DBT motherfuckers.

THE DAY JOHN HENRY DIED
I watched the rain; it settled in. We disappeared for days again.
Most of us were staying in, lazy like the sky.
The letters flew across the wire filtered through a million liars.
The whole world smelled like burning tires the day John Henry died.

We knew about that big machine that ran on human hope and steam.
Bets on John were far between and mostly on the side.
We heard he put up quite a fight. His hands and feet turned snowy white.
That hammer rang out through the night the day John Henry died.

When John Henry was a little bitty baby nobody ever taught him how to read
but he knew the perfect way to hold a hammer was the way the railroad baron held the deed.

It didn't matter if he won, if he lived, or if he'd run.
They changed the way his job was done. Labor costs were high.
That new machine was cheap as hell and only John would work as well,
so they left him laying where he fell the day John Henry died.

John Henry was a steel-driving bastard but John Henry was a bastard just the same.
An engine never thinks about his daddy and an engine never needs to write its name.

So pack your bags, we're headed west and L.A. ain't no place to rest.
You'll need some sleep to pass the test, so get some on the flight
and say your prayers John Henry Ford 'cause we don't need your work no more.
You should have known the final score the day John Henry died.

With all of the Drive By Truckers talk I think I'm going to have to check out their new one. I've liked their stuff before, just keep forgetting about this one.

The Rat is growing on me, but not enough to get the vote here yet. So I had to go with the Loretta Lynn, which I really like. Haven't heard the Belle & Sebastian.

I like 3 of those songs quite a bit (don't like The Walkmen) but voted for DBT.

B&S. It has been called their "Bohemian Rhapsody" but not sure if I would go that far. Great song!

Thanks for the response folks; I almost put up a Part 2 with 4 more debated songs (when you exist in the Dr. Bloor/Sen. Loogar haze, debates on any subject, big or small are never far away), but I gotta go get some work done. FUCK A BUNCH OF MONDAY.

All of these songs kick so much ass, but my vote here was for Portland, OR...

SP -- YOU GOTTA GET THAT DBT ALB....When I get my CPU back, I will gladly send it to you in whatever form you can recieve.

i don't think the b&s track is anywhere near as good as anything on catastrophe.

i voted walkmen.

if float on were on the list, it'd be a coin toss. and i would've tossed that coin HARD!

Oh dude. You rock. I put it on my Christmas list. I'm hoping Santa will come through, but if he doesn't I now know I have backup.

They have become a major obsession. Some of the absolute DARKEST material coming out of anywhere. Also, they can play a show so damn long, it'll make yr. boy Discostu bail out early.

Heavies.

So all 12 tracks on DCW are far superior to this one? I'm going to have to listen to that album again, because I don't remember it being nearly that good.

I just picked up this B&S EP, and Your Cover's Blown is pretty damn good. I would still cast my vote for The Rat in this poll though, with the B&S coming in 2nd.
