The riffs? So wouldn't that honor go to Iggy Pop, and the other artists who coined the riffs that are the Strokes bread and butter?

At this moment, I'd go with Green Day as being the band that we'll look back on with nostalgia for the naughties.

Coldplay comes mind, as well. Lots of imitators there.

In 20 years all the new indie hipsters will be "discovering" the under-appreciated bands that are "important" to the obners right now.

You just answered your own question regarding the importance of The Strokes.

They are the most influential band on the planet right now. There will be hundreds of Green Day-influenced bands in the next few years. The industry will make decisions based on Green Day-criteria. They are the Nirvana of Now.

I'd say if one thinks otherwise, they putting far too much stock in the percieved influence our best-loved little bands wield.

Unless by "important" Dalen meant "best." Which is not what "important" means.

i'd probably agree with this if we';re omitting rap, which dwarfs rock as far as american importance in music worldwide. Green Day or Fall Out Boy or some shit that nobody likes here. Id' say R.E.M., but that's only to britain.

importance is pretty damned subjective, no?

While we all may differ on the definition of important, I'm pretty sure we can all agree that Gang of Four, XTC, and Coldplay aren't American bands.

I'd was gonna say Arcade fire in terms of one record and potential to progress to do so many different things.

But then i remembered Canada!

Go for MMJ or even BRMC who have gone all folky and may go all rocky next.

Or I went off topic for a minute to point out that the Green Day story is an unusual one? You're important to me, Aaron. :rawr:

That's a good call, unless we're limiting this to bands.

True.

But, that's my way of saying that there simply isn't an American rock band - in the mainstream - doing anything nearly as "important" or as well as Kanye currently is. I don't even know that I much like Kanye's latest record, but he's it right now.

The Strokes are as important as Pearl Jam, minus the whole attempt to have a message, and without a hugely successful record a la Ten.

Your implicit point then is that rock is dead and hip hop artists are the most important influence in music. To what metric are you thinking of then? Albums sold? Others openly copying his style? Cohort adoration?
It all depends on perspective. I don't really like hip hop that much, so I personally don't find it something that would influence me very much nor would I personally consider it "important". I find the White Stripes to be important to me.

I don't think rock is dead, but I do think the current batch of bands are not as pervasive as most of the bigger pop and hip hop stars. Why is that the case? I haven't a clue. If I did, I certainly wouldn't waste my time on webboards.

Anyhow, as I implicitly pointed out in my last post, I have my own personal preference for "most important" and they certainly are nowhere near as influential/ubiq/whatever metric you prefer as a Kanye, Jay-Z, etc. I'd be psyched - really - if there was a run of Jack White-a-likes in mainstream rock right now, but I don't see it happening.

Green Day really cant be considered most successful today as well, unless you want to pool sales with awards over the last two years... American Idiot hasent sold half of what Dookie did a decade ago....

If anything, Linkin Park is probably the most successful rock band of the last few years.

In my opinion the Strokes revived interest in rock again in this country for alot of people. Without their hype and backlash, I'm not sure you would see the main stream success of the White Stripes.

I don't buy this. Their singles hit almost simultaneously, if I remember, and were similarly popular.

The way I remember it was different. I remember hearing about the Strokes everywhere before I even heard them. As for the Stripes, it seemed liked they created a buzz in indie circles then that kind of slowly swelled out. Didn't they release Hotel Yorba before Fell in love with A girl? I remember that doing nothing. Also they had killer video with the legos. But to me it seemed liked all of that was on tailcoating on the buzz of the Strokes.

But I do agree with you on one thing that the Stripes have obviously overshadowed the Strokes to the Mainstream since that point. But it seems like the whole start began with the Strokes in my mind.

Yeah Dov, what about a band like System of a Down? I know that they're hella popular, but I'm not sure about sales;

If we are talking from a Mainstream perspective, I would have to agree with Green Day. I try to avoid commercial radio as much as possible, especially mainstream alt-rock/metal stations, but every time I am forced to listen to it at work, it is clear as day that Green Day is influencing the play list. It's always them, Simple Plan, Switchfoot and All American Rejects.

If we are talking rock press and who the industry is looking to duplicate, I would say The Arcade Fire, since the Clap Your Hands Say Yeah phenomenon. The Killers and Bright Eyes seem to be media darlings, but I can't say they are the most important.

The Whites Stripes had more of a slow build over the course of 2 or 3 albums, but with The Strokes it was more like "DUDE THE STROKES ARE HERE" in every magazine shortly before and after the first album came out.

Id throw SOAD up there as well, even though them themselves being america hatewrs would decalre themselves as an armanian band before american...

but they too havent come close to Linkin Park in terms of sales.

I blame the Brits. They did the same thing with the Kings of Leon last year.

Wow. DAT LEG SEX!

Looking for woman for fun times-Milwaukee, Wisconsin
« on: November 01, 2005, 05:09:32 PM »

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I am a male age 43 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin looking for female friendships in Milwaukee as I have just moved here to be closer with family. I am straight. Gays or bisexuals need not apply however I respect your preferences.
My sexual interests are one on one leg-sex. I love legs and beautiful feet in nylons. I work, practice fitness and love music. I am completely single and interested in writing to someone for awhile before meeting with them personally. I also like to eat and watch interesting movies or go out to see the latest. For other activites I enjoy walking at the lake or in a safe neighborhood. I like children. I have no children of my own however I am quite fine with that. I hardly care about what kind of money you make as long as you are kind and understanding. I am a healthy male and interested in likewise. If you are interested, please reply WingMate
