I gotta hear that Devin Davis if Rads and FT give it props

Rads I am surprised you like that Redwalls so much. I gave it a re-burn/re-listen and the first 2 songs are openly terrible.

mine's looking something like this:

1) wolf parade- apologies to the queen mary
Image

2) the constantines- tournament of hearts
Image

3) hot chip- coming on strong
Image

4) tom vek- we have sound
Image

5) ivan smagghe- fabric 23 (not sure if i'm going to count this as a release since it's a mix and not an artist release)
Image

*subject to change
(and it's really going to be hard for me to narrow down my top 20 between rock & electronica. ergggh.)

Well I found myself at Tower during my lunch break so I picked this up. (Nevermind about that YSI, K.)

I like it for the most part, except it kinda bothers me how all of the production is made to sound intentionally old, and I don't like it when the dude sings like a Muppet. Sometimes the soulful singing sounds perfectly natural and inspired, and others it sounds like an overdone impression.

There are definitely some good songs on it, however. I don't regret buying it.

Bit of both. He's essentially a one-man band, and does earnest, literate indie balladry alongside songs like "Moon Over Shark City" (which sounds like a tribute to Bowie's "Suffragette City") and "Paratrooper With Amnesia" (which starts out all barrelhouse boogie and left-turns into pounding punk) and "Transcendental Sports Anthem" (which would definitely qualify as rockin' shit). The song "Iron Woman" might be the standout - a sort of indie power pop tune that manages to toss a squawkin' sax into the instrumental break (btw - Bloor should have that song in his greedy digits right about now).

Pretty rockin', for the most part. Certainly much more so than I was expecting.

Oh, and Idiopathic H. Christ also gives it a very high rating, so this is definitely GITMO-ready!

Its funny that you say that. I have an album by his prior band, the Stairs, which I like but don't love. Mojo did a write up of it as a lost classic. AMG calls it an overdone impression of the Who.

I'd still be interested in hearing this, but haven't stumbled upon it at a compelling price point yet.

Yeh, I think you'd dig it a whole bunch, Billy. It won't bring you back from the wilds of funk/soul/world music but it wouldn't be a complete waste of your money either.

And I think you'd like Edgar "Jones" Jones too - although Drinky raises some valid points about it. I kinda think its artifice is part of its point and, therefore, part of what makes it interesting - but I can see how that could rub a lot of folks the wrong way.
