I think what you miss is that there are literally tens of thousands of bands that play "good, straight-ahead rock'n'roll" Is it elitist to say that doing so makes it harder to stand out in the crowd? I don't dislike the Strokes and I can enjoy listening to them, but there's not that much there to make me choose to listen to them over hundreds of other similar bands.
But the Strokes quite obviously do stand out in the crowd or we wouldn't be having this discussion.
No they don't. We're only having this discussion because of a localized variation of the self-perpetuating popularity phenomenon. (I.E. Britney Spears at an indie level.)

You should have written that entire post in miniature text so I wouldn't have wasted the time it took to read it.

I didn't see 'Rings Around the World' on the list.

My favorites:

Low: Thing We Lost in the Fire

Unwound: Leaves Turn Inside you

But I went with MMJ: At Dawn

wan't that second beta band album in 2001

Yea, this was actually very close to being my favorite album of 2001 until late in the year when Things We Lost in the Fire really clicked for me. It was my favorite for probably a little over half the year.

Hardest one yet but I think Jimmy Eat World - Bleed American is the one I listened to the most so I'll vote for that.

On the list, I'd probably go with the Strokes barely beating the Shins and White Stripes.

By the way, does Low release an album every year or something. I swear they are on every one of these polls.

Huh? Isn't this the first (or second, at most) time they've been on the actual poll?

I'm not too familiar with any of their stuff before Secret Name so I might not have noticed the others.

If they're not on the poll it seems like they show up in the list of "other" releases. I just didn't realize they were so prolific.

1995
1996
1999
2000
2001
2002
2005
