Which formula is that? I don't really see the parallels. I guess they both have had good young pitchers over the years, but their offenses are entirely different.

I'm guessing the formula = dismantling the team every few years due to budget considerations.

Ah. I don't think the A's do that quite as exhaustively (except maybe last year with the Hudson and Mulder trades) but I see where he's coming from.

much improved, as are the Devil Rays

??????

np: Scritti Politti "Early"

both teams have gotten better.

Maybe you could explain how the devil rays are better? They had the second worst record in the majors last year which was worse than their 2004 record. I doubt Lou Piniella would agree with you.

hmm, I guess I didn't research my info that great, I just know they had some good young hitters and play in a tough division so the record is misleading somewhat.

Trade all their older good players? the A's aren't as drastic with it, but they also don't really win.

Yeah, billy clarified. Got it now.

They haven't made the playoffs the last two seasons (though they had winning records both times) but made it each year from 2000-2003 and haven't had a losing record since 1998. That's a pretty decent run, even if they didn't actually win the World Series in that time. Neither did the Cardinals or the Braves, and I think most would agree they've been pretty successful.

My argument was that they haven't had as much success as the Marlins using a similar theory.

The Marlins? Maybe. The quality of prospects isn't as high as it was last time they did this but they'll probably get a few gems in there, then add a little free agent talent for a year, and call it a championship again.

it was more intended to be a joke, but it has merit as it's happened before with them. the marlins, of course.

Obviously not. But the Marlins do it more dramatically. Maybe that means everyone should dismantle their team constantly.

I'm kidding, obviously

Well, hindsight is 20/20. It's easy now to look back now and see how Derrek Lee and AJ Burnett turned out, but were they even the most talked about prospects in those deals? I don't remember. I guess that's your point though. A few gems.
