Good thing that I've got Matt Lauer and Katie Couric to fill me in on the news of the day. I had no idea that Mariah had a new album. Or such an appetitie. Antyhing respectable on this list this year?

- Electronic/Dance Album can't lose
- Franz + Foos in group rock performance
- NIN, QOTSA, & System in hard rock
- Alternative Music Album another no-loss
- Common with four rap noms
- Hope in country w/ Emmylou Harris, Willie Nelson, and Allison Krauss across most categories
- Ry Muthafukkin' Cooder!!!! for contemporary folk
- Lewis Black in comedy
- Spamalot in musicals
- Arcade Fire gets a second nom for their 'Six Feet Under' track
- Ani DiFranco for packaging
- Danger Mouse with a production nom for Gorillaz

Was anyone else surprised that Coldpaly wasn't up for album of the year? I really thought with all the hubub...

Also, I didn't expect LCD to be nom'd twice no less.

I agree...however much I would love to say voters would vote towards McCartney, I think this will be Mariah night.

It's actually a collab with Norman Cook, so he might not get much airtime. The fact that he's even here is ace. It's like Nashville Pussy's nom for "Fried Chicken and Coffee" back in the day.

I was hoping for some different nominees in the Alternative category. No offense to Beck, because I love his music, but Guero probably shouldn't have made the cut. It seems like he and Radiohead will get nominated everytime they come out with a new album, sort of like they are the industry's fallback nominees when they haven't really listened to all that is out there.
The Franz Ferdinand and DCFC albums were viewed to be lesser works than both of those bands previous albums according to the elitist critics. I really hope Funeral wins

arcade fire is up for alternative music album even though it wasn't released within the eligibility period. that's pretty interesting, right?

Probably not their justification, but the vinyl release was '05.

i think of all the "main" categories of interest, arcade fire's the only artist on an indie.

Actually I'm pretty sure the Grammy rules have a provision for allowing an album released before the eligibility period to be nominated if it "gained prominence" during the eligibility period. "Funeral" was released only 2-6 weeks before the eligibility period for last year ended, and it got the bulk of its press and buzz after that, so nominating it this year is totally justified.

after the Billboard awards screwed me out of the hilarity of a Federline performance, I am boycotting all awards ceremonies, which I haven't watched since 1995 anyway. Who the hell is hosting this, anyway. Tell me Billy Crystal...

I remember Fountains of Wayne getting nominated for Best New Artist after releasing their thrid album. I though that was kind of interesting, being that their first two had been major label releases.

Yeah, that was just plain weird. When I saw them in concert after that year's awards (Evanescence won, beating FoW and 50 Cent) some girl, who had clearly only discovered the band after "Stacy's Mom" said they got robbed, and the lead singer said, "Naw, 50 got robbed, not us."

Rivers Cuomo is nominated for best rock songwriting for 'Beverly Hills'.

Quote:
Where I come from isn't all that great
My automobile is a piece of crap
My fashion sense is a little whack
And my friends are just as screwy as me

I didn't go to boarding schools
Preppie girls never looked at me
Why should they?
I ain't nobody
Got nothing in my pocket

Beverly Hills
That's where I want to be
Livin' in Beverly Hills
Beverly Hills
Rolling like a celebrity
Livin' in Beverly Hills

Look at all those movie stars
They're all so beautiful and clean
When the housemaids scrub the floors
They get the spaces in between

I wanna live a life like that
I wanna be just like a king
Take my picture by the pool
'cause I'm the next big thing

This is funny:

Best New Artist
(For a new artist who releases, during the Eligibility Year, the first recording which establishes the public identity of that artist.)

Ciara
Fall Out Boy
Keane
John Legend
SugarLand

See, and all this time, I didn't realize that the more money you put into an album, the more you deserved an award. God damn, I'm stupid.

I read it more as him saying that, for the ammunt of money and effort he put into the album, he should be allowed to be honest and say how he feels about it. He never says anything about the caliber of the album against any of his nominees, just that he doesn't want to rest on the "it's an honor to be nominated" platitudes.

I feel ya. It sounded more to me like "I spent a shitload of time and money making this, so if I don't win, I am going to flip out." Aka, "I am owed something."

edit: Mostly because of this passage:

Kanye West Wrote:
"If I don't win Album of the Year, I'm gonna really have a problem with that. I can never talk myself out of [winning], you know why? Because I put in the work''
