I can hear
Super Furry Animals - "Torra Fy Nygwalt N Hyr" (pardon my spelling)

after just about any song.
Any genre.
It just will fit no matter what, I think.

Ditto:
Rolling Stones - "Monkey Man"

Slide 'em in... it's seamless!

And get your minds out of the gutter!

Wouldn't fit on a space rock comp.

Papa M - "Sorrow Reigns"

Its short (a little over a minute, I think) and simple (just him and a guitar) and pretty funny. Lyrics:
Quote:
sarah jane, sorrow reigns blue
sarah jane, sorrow reigns blue
there was something like a wall between us
that stopped your going down on my penis
the ghost of lover's past still await your response
was I just a medium in your seance
I had to turn off all my feelings towards you
for I am not the one that rewards you
I'll be with other women you'll be with other men
still I can't help but wonder about
what could have been
sarah jane sorrow reigns blue
you didn't love me the way I loved you

Motorhead - "1916"

It's a ballad, but it's Motorhead. It's folk, but by a classic metal band. It's mellow. but it's Motorhead. Motorhead are not disliked by punks or rednecks. Plus it's one of their only "arty" songs, so the NPR crowd would like it. And Lemmy has never lost cred with indie lovers, hipsters, hippies, headbangers, etc, etc.

Smashing Pumpkins "1979" goes with anything and everything

so does Folk Implosion's "Natural One"

Boards of Canada's songettes also work real well with anything you put them with especially "Over the Horizon Radar" just tack it onto anything you want

I think Eliott Smith works in every situtation you put him in
(country, folk, indie, emo, 70's singer/songwriter, world, metal fans don't think he's gay cause he killed himself, your parents could listen to him and he's got this great classic sound that's very unsuspecting but extremely deep)

Good call on the Animal Collective above.

I'd say 'Simon (The Bird with the Candy Bar Head)' by Elf Power, it's definitely been on a ton of my mixes.

The Konstantimix doctrine is "Any Song Can Fit Into Any Mix."

All you have to do is get the running order right.

Yep, I would have to agree with this. Everything in its right place and it all works.

That's a good one, though it's better earlier in the mix, methinks. ;)

I was going to post that one too. I did make a mix once that I really like that has Everything In It's Right Place leading off. looked something like this...

Radiohead - Everything in it's Right Place
Slint - Washer
P.J. Harvey - Down by the River
Pink Floyd - See Emily Play
Wire - Kidney Bingos
Laurie Anderson - Strange Angels
The tranglers - Golden Brown
Richard Davies - Eye Camera
Los Lobos - Kiko
The Creatures - Pity
Notwist - Consequence
Portishead - Roads
Sarah McLaughlin - Drawn to the hythm
Spacemen 3 - I Love You
Yo La Tengo - Nowhere Near
Brian Eno - Golden Hours
Ultravox - Vienna
Frank Zappa - G Spot Tornado (from The Yellow Shark)

I know/own about half those songs, and that looks like a really cool mix. I especially like you putting G-Spot Tornado at the end -- that's a very "Dusty" thing to do.

The good Reverend's "Slow" would work, too, though it might rattle a twee-pop comper.

you can end any mix with "ooh la la"
i've ended hip hop DJ nights with it and it worked.
