Mae is like a poor man's Jimmy Eat World which isn't a bad thing

Further Seems Forever got a lot of hype in the emo Christian community

One could draw lines from Eisley to Mazzy Star

Ester Drang resemble Bends era Radiohead

Chevelle are Christian

Under Oath are probably the most popular underground Christian artists i know but their screamo with similarities to Story of the Year

Blindside put a pretty good record together in Silence though it's more Deftones kind of area

other than that just get him Damien Rice and tell him he's Christian

emo girls love guys who listen to Damien Rice

The greatest of them all, but I doubt he'd like.

Do not. I repeat. DO NOT get The Everglow by Mae. Get the first album...i think it's called embers and envelopes. Who knows. But the Everglow is reminiscent of what the Juliana Theory turned into with Music from Another Room--n'sync that play their own instruments. ick.

I forgot about Ester Drang. That is a great suggestion. just great.

Mae is the type of band that I can't really recommend to anyone who posts here, but for a kid weened on New Found Glory, Brand New, Dashboard Confessional, and all that pop/emo stuff...Mae is actually a step up. I don't really think either of their albums are spectacular. But I actually like 2 or 3 songs from Everglow.

And yeah, Ester Drang are bloody great. Seen 'em twice live. Once opening for Starflyer 59 and another time opening for Pedro the Lion. Most fans like Goldenwest but I think Infinite Keys is better.

The new Juliana Theory album sucks.

I can't believe that no one's mentioned Splender yet.

Great pop-rock hooks. One of the very few Christian bands I can actually listen to without wincing.

Recommended.

I would post in this thread something useful, but I've been out of Christian music scene since I quit a Christian radio station 8 years ago.

So, just reference back to Naked Prey's post cuz that's pretty much what I'd post anyway.

I still recommend several Daniel Amos cd's (a band not a person), several by The Waiting, of course the 77's and Pedro.

Dolorean I like a lot, didn't realize they were considered "Christian."

And the eternal we-don't-quite-fit-in-anywhere recommendatrion of anything by The Innocence Mission. Though that might not qualify as "rock."

South Pacific, any chance you'd have that stuff on Colinswood?

Three bands he really likes are:

Sanctus Real
Newsboys
Audio Adrenaline

If he likes these he should have The Waiting's self-titled from '97. Fits in the taste category, but far superior album.

Actually, I like the stuff I have heard from his bands, but I am trying to get him something good, meaning I condone it. Whether it is "indie" or not doesn't matter to me.

You are familiar with these Haq?

yeah, i'm trying to think of others along those lines he'd like.

definitely check out (yes, this is a real band) Seven Day Jesus's self titled album, and All-Star United's s/t as well. If I think of others, I'll let you know.

Oh, you should get him Toad the Wet Sprocket's "Dulcinea" - the inspired most Christian pop bands anyway.

You aren't invisible. You just haven't suggested anything besides Pedro and Sufjan (whom I hate).

i'm sure this kind knows them, but he's bound to like Jimmy Eat World if he's not dead set on listening to only Christian music. also, you might be able to slip a little of you buddies collective soul in their. they're pretty christian-sounding.

for more folky stuff, in the Jars of Clay vein, you could try Caedmon's Call.

Is there a reason all the albums you are recommending came out in 1997? ;)

That first track on the Seven Day Jesus is exactly what I am looking for, but the other tracks with samples are not as good.

Haha, yeah, that was the absolute tail end of my foray into Christian music. But also a lot of the bands are still together but make much, much worse music as a result of the corrosive effect of the Xtian music industry.

Yeah, he'll love switchfoot. You could get him almost any of theirs.

OOH, also (another '90s pick) try Common Children.
