Did I also hear that Todd Jones signed with Detroit? (in addition to The Gambler)

Who the fuck is going to close games for the Braves next season?

good pickup for the dodgers, the Sox wanted Mueller as a back up but it would have cockhurt him too much

KW getting Mackowiak instead signaled that Mueller was gone. Which is better since he plays OF as well... and he's cheaper.

Someone on baseballthinkfactory posted this about the Mackowiak deal:

Deck the bench with useful players
Fa-la-la-la-la, la-la-la-la
Send T.I.M.O.™ his walkin’ papers
Fa-la-la-la-la, la-la-la-la

Kinda funny.

Definitely, that Marte trade is the best trade KW has ever made, it's beautiful. The funny thing is knowing him he could have gotten even more for him if he wanted to.

I also love it when team trades for a player they traded away a few years ago.

What? Why would he not want to?

Now the Sox have three 3rd basemen and no SS.

And Gammons hinted that Theo might be coming back.

apparently, they will probly still get Lugo from TB even though they couldnt pull off that three team trade....

Dunno.

Also, apparently the Bravos might be picking up a left fielder who could also bat leadoff? Whodat? Y'all know baseball better than I so I'm not real sure. Personally, I've got no problem with Marcus Giles batting leadoff and Renteria batting second. Pure leadoff hitters are a thing of the past IMHO.

I just want a fucking closer, already. Smoltz is 813 years old. He can't physically Start and Close every game even if his brain tells him that he can.....

whist sox? ozuna's a second baseman/SS. Mackowiak is a god of all sorts because he had 12 RBIs in one day against the Cubs, and Willie Harris plays 2nd. Theo's not coming back, hold yr dick.

Which Sox do you think, genius?

Gammons was just on the radio a few hours ago and someone asked him if they think Theo had a hand in any of the trades the Sox have been making and he said "of course" then they asked if he might come back to the GM position and he was like "uhhhh...yeah". I really don't care if he comes back or not.

They were also throwing around Reese or Gonzalez (Marlins) as possibilities.

Also, Tejada wants to be traded. We'll take him for Manny.

Not to parrot Jim Rome too much here, but could the guy I see on my 20 dollar bills (aka P. Gammons) be a bigger Red Sox shill?

I hate those lovefests. At least Buster Olney doesnt get a noticeable erection when he reports on the Yankees.....

He's awful... according to Gammons, the BoSox got the bestest prospect that ever walked for Renteria. Simmons is the same way... at least he CAN be entertaining.

What I don't get about this is that the D'backs had one of the worst fucking bullpens in the majors last year. I thought those two guys were supposed to be two of their better ones (you'd think anyway), so wtf? I'm glad though, cause I hate the Diamondbacks.

The Padres have just made a couple of puzzling trades.

They traded Mark Loretta to the Red Sox for Doug Mirabelli. And Sean Burroughs to the Devil Rays for Dewon Brazelton. Very lopsided trades, IMO.

I think they're trying to free up salary to re-sign Trevor Hoffman. They may not be equal trades talent-wise, but it accomplishes that and gives them a catcher since I guess they are losing one via free agency?

The Loretta trade only freed up like 1.75 million. I don't like this trade at all. Mirabelli? .240 backup catcher for a solid 2B that can easily hit above .300? Another factor, though, is that we have Josh Barfield ready to take over from AAA. He's the Padres' best prospect. If it's not this year, it's going to be next year.

Ramon Hernandez is off to the O's and all we have now is Miguel Olivo, who is not someone you want to trust as your starting catcher. Not thrilled about Mirabelli, but at least he's cheap and a good defender, supposedly. We have a good prospect who is projected to be ready in a year or so.

You got yourself 4 years of a pussy who won't block the plate and puts himself above his team, even in the fucking playoffs. He is supposed to be good at calling games though, and lord knows the O's could use some help with pitching.

I've heard rumors of a Aki Otsuka/Josh Barfield for Marcus Giles trade. Aki can close, though he's not really totally dependable all the time. Barfield is a touted 2B prospect, son of Jesse. This way the Giles brothers can love each other everyday.

PHOENIX -- It appears the Diamondbacks and White Sox are close to a deal that would send Javier Vazquez to Chicago in exchange for pitcher Orlando "El Duque" Hernandez and highly regarded outfielder Chris Young.

The two teams are expected to announce the deal on Wednesday.

Arizona acquired Vazquez last January in a trade that sent Randy Johnson to the Yankees, and the veteran exercised his contractual right to demand a trade last month after going 11-15 with a 4.42 ERA in 33 starts in 2005.

Diamondbacks general manager Josh Byrnes, who has worked tirelessly for the past month exploring the market for Vazquez, declined to confirm or deny the trade when reached on Tuesday night.

"We are looking to get better, and we don't want to put ourselves in a position where our first priority is compromised and that's pitching," White Sox GM Kenny Williams told reporters on Tuesday, before word of the deal leaked. "We are not trying to break up anything. We are looking to add to the equation, fortify it, and not anything else.

"I see no reason to change the approach we have had from Day 1. It's the only way I know how to do business, by continuing to be as aggressive as possible. We are aggressive with a little more caution this year, not because we won last year, but we are cognizant of the makeup for the club."

The deal sets up the White Sox to have one of the best rotations in baseball with Mark Buehrle, Freddy Garcia, Vazquez, Jon Garland and Jose Contreras.

The Diamondbacks' refusal to pick up any part of the money owed Vazquez was believed to be a deal breaker for some teams. The Diamondbacks received $9 million from the Yankees to help offset Vazquez's contract when they acquired him last year. Vazquez is set to earn $11.5 million in 2006 and $12.5 million in 2007.

Since he demanded a trade, he gave up the right to be a free agent after his contract expires, so Chicago would be able to offer him arbitration for the third year.

Last year with Double-A Birmingham, the 22-year-old Young hit .277 with 41 doubles, 26 homers and 32 stolen bases in 38 attempts. The year before for Class A Kannapolis, he had 24 homers and 31 steals.

Baseball America, which ranked Young as Chicago's sixth-best prospect before his outstanding 2005 season wrote, "Designated as the best athlete and quickest base runner in the organization, Young is blessed with tremendous speed and is blossoming into a power hitter as well."

Hernandez was 9-9 with a 5.12 ERA for the White Sox last season and probably made his biggest contribution to the World Series champions in Game 3 of the American League Division Series against the Red Sox.

Hernandez entered the game in the sixth inning with the bases loaded, no outs and the White Sox clinging to a one-run lead. The right-hander got Jason Varitek and Tony Graffanino to pop out before fanning Johnny Damon to end the frame and the White Sox went on to win the game and sweep the series.

Hernandez, whose age has been reported to be anywhere between 36 to 40, defected from Cuba in December of 1997 and pitched for the Yankees from 1998 through 2004 before signing a two-year contract with the White Sox last year.

As a Giants fan I am happy as can be with Matt Morris along side our ace Jason Schmidt.

I heart baseball!

The A's look really good this year as well.

You beat me to it... I like this deal contingent to getting another stud arm for the pen. And a bona fide CF to boot. This opens the door for a Garland for Vernon Wells deal.
