Clinton Says Bush Is 'Flat Wrong' on Kyoto

Former President Clinton told a global audience of diplomats, environmentalists and others Friday that the Bush administration is "flat wrong" in claiming that reducing greenhouse-gas emissions to fight global warming would damage the U.S. economy.

With a "serious disciplined effort" to develop energy-saving technology, he said, "we could meet and surpass the Kyoto targets in a way that would strengthen and not weaken our economies."

Clinton, a champion of the Kyoto Protocol, the existing emissions-controls agreement opposed by the Bush administration, spoke in the final hours of a two-week U.N. climate conference at which Washington has come under heavy criticism for its stand.

Most delegations appeared ready Friday to leave an unwilling United States behind and open a new round of negotiations on future cutbacks in the emissions blamed for global warming.

"There's no longer any serious doubt that climate change is real, accelerating and caused by human activities," said Clinton, whose address was interrupted repeatedly by enthusiastic applause. "We are uncertain about how deep and the time of arrival of the consequences, but we are quite clear they will not be good."

Pipe down, Willie. I have so much man love for BC that its' kinda sick really, but he was a really weak president on energy and environmental issues.

Monday morning quarterbacking is easy, though.

I think BC and Paul Martin are getting along famously up there. His "anti-American" remarks are getting a huge amount of press up here today.

Maybe. An argument could be made for Nixon for getting the Clean Air and Water Acts through Congress. And lets not forget establishing Earth Day. But he may have just been guilty or drunk when that shit came up.

I'd probly go with Carter; they started all these programs to give tax breaks to people who had solar panels and like windmills in their backyards and shit.

It didnt work, but at least they tried.

I just love this because you know there is no way imaginable that Bush could force these (semi) big words and (almost) complex ideas out of his burn-out slackjawed redneck mouth.

It's hard for me to blame Reagan for the evil shit he did because he was just a senile old man, but Nixon was flat out crazy. His domestic programs were unusually populist for a president, but he was just too power hungry, corrupt and paranoid to leave a clean, positive legacy.
