The eventual outcome of perpetual parity IS perpetual putridity. For example, after the magical run of alternative and hip-hop music from 1991-1995, everyone was so worn out from quality music that we allowed one-word crappy bands like Creed and Live to become famous, as well as untalented rappers like Diddy and Ja Rule, eventually leading to the inexplicable boom in hacky pop music, boy bands and that metal rock miasma. Just watch the SNL reruns from the bulk of the Will Ferrell era -- it's a musical apocalypse.

the death of biggie and pac is what paved the way for Ja Rule and Diddy.

Things are cyclical. Quality goes up for a while, then we get stuck with matchbox 20 for a while. Up and down. No more mystery to it than that.

Is it that 91-95 was more magical or was it just that there were more good artists getting mainstream exposure?

I think maybe when a genre is newish, then the big studios haven't had a chance to formulate and promote canned winners in those genres yet. So the only people who "make it big" within them are the real deal, more or less. Then a few years go by, and commerce takes its course.

i would agree, but rap got popular with really silly poppy songs before the quality bubbled to the top.

I attribute this to the technology curve inherent to rap. It used new tools, pretty much nothing handed down. So as tools got better, we got better beats, better sound, more experimentation within the format, etc. Then things got good.

How far in are talking here? Public Enemy or earlier? I mean the early Rubin produced shit is dope and all but its not especially complicated. That first PE album broke a lot of grounfd in the multilayered sound aspect of hip hop, right?

Actually though, there's some GrandMaster Flash shit that is pretty dense as well.

the SP 1200 was a big leap for hip hop production.
i believe it helped sculpt the Primier and DITC sound.
