I worked my last day at the music store last week. This means I no longer have my handy-dandy record store discount.

So... um... where on the "World Wide Web" do you crazy kids find musical selections? I seem to remember some young wipper-snapper mentioning something called "MP3s"?

Translation: I'm an old-school cd-buying type who hasn't download anything since Napster went under. Where's the best download site? Slsk? Limewire?

I personally use the newsgroups. It's a great resource, especially if you like full albums and don't like searching.

I use SoulSeek.

Plus a bunch of us obnerites -- kochalka, dmbself, Fastnbulbous, tentoze, Zombeels, etc. -- all have each other listed on our userlists so you get immediate connection when stealing from us.

Aw. Not true. I was slightly late to my (very sweet) birthday thread. Thank you for starting it. :)

Since I live far away from hands-on sources, I've got a Launchcast station I've made over the past 4 years. As songs come up I like a lot I download them from Soulseek, so I often have the song on my harddrive before it's finished playing on Launchcast (or if I hear it several times and wind up liking it I download it at a later point). When I really like something, I get the CD.

Also I peruse blogs, review sites, and forums, but usually don't buy based on other's recommends. I'm a have-to-hear-it-myself kind of guy.

If I didn't have the online source I'd have no idea what was out there.

Anyone else seen that the world's best Torrent-finding website now displays the following if you search for anything particularly mainstream (Oasis, Coldplay, Star Wars etc):

"There has been an error with your search

This search query has been blocked at the request of the copyright holder, in compliance with
the Digital Millennium Copyright Act ("DMCA")"

Surely a search itself can't be illegal?
Will BitTorrent's new built-in tracker prove to be a suitable replacement?
Is this the end for yet another file-sharing technology?
If so - where will people turn next?

but sl5k is still around, we have an Obner room...

wrong. this has never happened to me or anyone that i trade music with, and we use all of the top Torrent search engines. i just searched for all of the artists above, and there were no errors. But nice try.

Bee, you seem to think that SOULSEEK is this elite group of traders that are hidden away from the MP3 Police. You're sadly mistaken.

A few advantages for Torrent sites:

1. Extremely fast downloads. Much faster than Soulseek.
2. Bit rates on most sites are 192 and above.
3. Search functions are much faster. No scrolling through someones list to find a release. The Soulseek search is crap. Always has been.
