I've decided to get rid of the iMac I got earlier this year and get a iBook instead. So I need to know a couple things:

First of all I'll give first dibs if anyone here wants it before I put it on ebay. It'd make a good Xmas present I suppose. Just thought I'd ask.

And second thing is I need to know how to erase everything on it so it'll be like it was when it came out of the box. Should I just save everything and re-install the OS?

Any help would be sweet.

Oh, and if someone here wants to buy it, I'll leave all 50G or so of music on it.

Just sayin'.

Nobody wants 50G of your Metallica, Sarah McLachlan, and Sting bootlegs.

Just sayin.

I'm not familiar with Macs, but that's a good approach for almost any operating system.

A lot of Windoze computers come with "image" installs these days, if you got that, that should do it.

PS I'd want it, but I ain't got the dosh.

Re-installing the OS should give you the option of wiping the HD clean.

BUT

If you buy your new machine first, you should be able to transfer everything from your old one directly onto it via firewire or USB. I did this when I bought my new machine a few months ago. Saved me a lot of time.

We dislike you equally, In fact, I told Dave that you will probably start referring to yourself as "Michael" at the behest of your gf.

I'm just dissapointed that I didnt get the opportunity to pirate your discs before you moved to Wisc. like you did with mine.

yeah, you can just hook up a firewire/usb cable between them. failing that, an ethernet cable between them works fine too, but its a little more tricky to set up. installing the operating system will erase everything, but its still possible to read the stuff you are erasing. so if you had sensitive info on the disk and you want to be assured no one will tamper with it, theres the option while installing the operating system to rewrite the hard drive a few times so this isnt possible.

You can transfer everything over via Firewire using "Target Disc Mode". Hook up the 2 puters with a FW cable, restart one puter holding down the T key. It wil mount on the other puter as a FW drive. Then you can copy stuff over.

To erase the iMac, boot up with the OS install disc. Open Disc Utility (it should be under one of the menus at the top of the screen, I think "File") This will allow you to erase the hard drive. Then reinstall a fresh version of the OS.

Drinky's right... just pop in your installer disk and you can erase your entire HD... I believe through disk utility.

Outta curiosity, what prompts the change? Portability?

Busty,
If you do a low level format using the disk utility it should give you the option to zero everything out. it will take a while but that will make it harder to pull out any sensitive data if someone tries to use Norton or some other repair utility. If you just do a system re-install some of the header info is still there and can still be read.
