So I watched the DVD of the Gram Parsons Tribute concert held in Los Angeles last year this weekend. I sadly didn't attend the show itself. I don't have any friends who are fans of country rock and its not the sort of show I'd go solo to.

But I'd highly recommend it to anyone who is a fan. Its mostly just playing with little in the way of speechs by any of the musicians of what Gram meant to them. Although there's a second version on the disc with running commentary by Polly Parsons (Gram's daughter) and her childhood friend and co-producer (I'm too lazy to look up her name).

Among those playing:

Steve Earle, Keith Richards, Jim Lauderdale, James Burton, Al Perkins, Jim James, John Doe, Dwight Yoakam, Norah Jones, Victoria Williams, etc etc

A highlight was seeing Jim James dancing around stage in a pink Nudie Suit. He looked happy as a pig in shit to be wearing it. Also a nice story about how the whole tribute came together without really having a lot of bank behind it.

Anyone else seen this?

Damn, I meant to say Lucinda Williams, not Victoria. I get them mixed up sometimes. And I can't believe I forgot Jay Farrar.

Others who were planning to participate and couldn't due to scheduling conflicts:

Elvis Costello (tour conflicts)
Beck (child birth)

I think I'm going to eventually have to buy this too. I think that Fallen Angels, the Gram Documentary may be out next month too.

And the Townes Van Zandt doc "Be Here Now" hits theatres this friday in other news.

The Return of the Grievous Angel that Emmylou Harris put together a few years ago was pretty good too. Nothing that really outclasses the originals, but still fun ... maybe a bit overproduced at times, and they mastered it with too much compression, but still ...

1 She Pretenders, Emmylou Harris
2 Ooh Las Vegas Cowboy Junkies
3 Sin City Beck, Emmylou Harris
4 $1,000 Wedding Evan Dando, Juliana Hatfield
5 Hot Burrito #1 Mavericks
6 High Fashion Queen Chris Hillman, Steve Earle
7 Juanita Sheryl Crow, Emmylou Harris
8 Sleepless Nights Elvis Costello
9 Return of the Grievous Angel Lucinda Williams, David Crosby
10 One Hundred Years from Now Wilco
11 A Song for You Whiskeytown
12 Hickory Wind Gillian Welch
13 In My Hour of Darkness Rolling Creekdippers
