Acid Casuals is the side group of one of the more essential members of SFA, Cian Ciaran. They've been around since the mid-'90s - basically since SFA's inception - and were behind the music blasted out of the infamous purple peace tank. Throughout the years, they've been rather ancillary to SFA, never releasing anything substantial. But now Cian, paired with a guy from Big Leaf (another Welsh band), has a single EP out and is looking at releasing his first LP early 2006. "Bowl it Over" is the name of the single, and it is phenomenal. Along with it is a b-side called "If I'm a Selt, You're a Sunt" that is surprisingly great. I never really knew what to expect from a solo project from Cian, but it appears he may actually be a great songwriter.

If you'd like a YSI of the Acid Casuals EP - three tracks - by all means ask. I'm very excited for the full length, Omni, after hearing this. This, Gruff' solo, and the upcoming The Peth (Dafyd, the drummer's, project) may make me forget about the underwhelming Love Kraft. One has to wonder why the band is suddenly releasing solo albums, although Daffyd apparently contributed to the Acid Casuals' music; but he and Cian are brothers, so that could explain that away.

Thank you much. I've been lurking a while; just thought I'd register when I had something to contribute.

I like this so much better than Gruff's last solo endeavour.

Yes I got this off of my other site today, new album will drop in Feb. Anything with SFA attached to it is a good thing in my book.

Then you should be glad to hear SFA's drummer also has an album coming out soon. Gruff describes his band or whatever as hedonistic rock music.

I liked Gruff's solo a lot, so I'll hold off until the actual full length releases. But this is probably going to turn out better than Love Kraft if the rest of the material is as awesome as "If You're a Selt, I'm a Sunt." I love that track. The way it gets all noisy and loud just rules too much.

QUOTE:

It's called Omni (Acid Casuals album) and it's out in January on Placid Casual ( www.placidcasual.com ) It has bits of the 'lost' rumoured techno SFA album and other bits from previous SFA recording sessions... It's quite good.

The number of Super Furry side projects is growing as we speak. After Gruff himself kicked off a solo career earlier this year in fine style with Yr Atal Genhedlaeth , now keyboards/electronics man Cian Ciaran is set to follow suit this month on the SFA owned Placid Casual label. "Its really beautiful," says Gruff. "There's one doo-wop song. And there's a couple of songs with singing, just abstract singing with no lyrics built on loops basically. Cian does a lot of minimal techno, but he keeps that stuff for twelve inches. This is more orchestral. There's some piano driven struff, some very electronic songs and generally just beautiful instrumental music.

"Now Daf has started a rock band called The Peth," continues Gruff, "It means 'The Thing' in welsh. They're going to be a bilingual monster rock band. It's kind of anthemic stuff. He's an ELO fan so its like ELO and Badfinger. He's got all his drug buddies on board, so it'll be very hedonistic. Like a satanic Abba."
