The allmusic description is pretty dead-on, and in fact many people think it's better than Blank Generation.

I don't.
It is pretty great, however.
The guy really needs to put out more music.
Although now that Quine is gone, The Voidoids just would not be the same.

My vote:
it's a toss-up between Judas Priest, XTC, and Michael Jackson.

Awww hell... gotta go with Other for XTC.
It is their best, IMO.

shit I have that listed as 1983 in my list.

Naw that was 1982. Prince "1999" was also 1982. I'm not a big fan of either -- just saying...

Others:

Djavan -- Luz
Grandmaster Flash & The Furious Five -- Message
Sun Ra -- Nuclear War
Marvin Gaye -- Midnight Love
Fleshtones -- Roman Gods
X -- Under the Big Black Sun
King Sunny Ade -- JuJu Music

I'd probably go for either Avalon or Hex Enduction Hour with the runners up being

Shoot Out the Lights
Imperial Bedroom

I'm pretty surprised that you'd pick Rio and Night and Day over Imperial Bedroom, Hex Enduction Hour and Shoot Out the Lights. Both of those albums are awful IMO and I'm even a Joe Jackson fan.

Edit: I decided to vote for Avalon...it was kinda a toss up so I thought rather than voting "other" I'd go for the one included in the poll.

this is now between nebraska and thriller for me. rio's singles are great, but we all know that a handful of good singles make not great albums (see: hot fuss).

i'm admittedly not a huge springsteen fan, but after seeing the london show on pbs last week, i'm going to start searching out more of his early work. i do like nebraska a whole lot, though.

and, of course, thriller is pretty phenomenal.

oh, and english settlement is excellent too.

hmm, decisions...

I think maybe the most remarkable thing about Thriller might be that it was truly that Good, yet was as mainstream as could be. To my knowledge, that doesn't happen too often. I don't mean like when U2 puts out a good rock record after a string of Meh, I mean dancey, pop stuff. MJ might be the worst case of Shit-The-Bed-itis ever.

I had to go with MJ mainly because I haven't heard any of the others. What a crappy year for music.

I can only think that our cardigan wearing, soy latte sipping friend is expressing his disdain for me by describing me as thus.

Yeah it did. I don't know what SK's source is for thinking it was 1983. But its a bit strange that a hell of a lot of critics voted for it in the 1982 Village Voice poll if it were 1983.

Imperial Bedroom finished #1 that year with Shoot out the Lights #2. Those two are still BIG omissions in my mind.

I still haven't heard that Richard Hell. I take it you don't agree with Todd and SK that its particularly strong?

AMG says Prince's 1999 was released in February of 1983. Any other sources say its 1982?

Also, Radcliffe, I respectfully acknowledge that you have disagreements with the poll selections. Carry on.

It was the south park mascot election - the kids were pissed that animal rights activists made them stop being the cows, so everyone nominated a giant douche and a turd sandwich.

<=== is among that number.

The Damned * Strawberries (Virgin), gets my vote. It's my fave Damned record by far, and one of the best punk-to-pop transition records ever. I could listen to, hell I *have* listened to this record for days on end and it never gets old.

Oh yeah, my copy is strawberry-scented. I've also got a red vinyl pressing--one of the few records of which I own multiple copies.
