In case you hadn't heard:

Quote:
Coachella 2006 unveiled
Depeche Mode say they're playing

The dates for next year's Coachella festival have been announced.

The Californian bash will take place on April 29 and 30, and although no line-up has been announced yet, Depeche Mode's Dave Gahan has confirmed his group will be co-headlining, MTV reports.

Before that, a film about the history of the festival will be released in selected theatres on January 24 in the US.

Among the bands featured on Coachella will be Arcade Fire, Radiohead, Pixies and Oasis.

Anyone planning on going?

Posted this last night in the DM thread. A film is a new twist that I hadn't heard about.

For an interview on how this whole thing leaked from the KROQ thingy see post: http://www.obner.org/bb/viewtopic.php?t=14529

marco and I will likely make it 3 in a row...
I hope Arcade Fire returns, it was the highlight of the last two years (although wilco and bloc party didn't suck either)

how many years has coachella been on? it's been 3-4, right? is there really enough history to warrant a film?

it hasn't been seven years- 6 i presume. first one was in 1999 (when tool & rage played, and it was only one day). they skipped 2000 and came back as a 2 day fest in 2001.

and of course i'm going to coachella. we already reserved our hotel rooms. ;)

do they just use the same people every year? It seems like there's a pretty perennial lineup.

not necessarily... but the past couple of years, the quality of the electronica lineup has went down which is disappointing.

Here's the lineup that I've seen floating around the web. It's probably just pure speculation, but for what it's worth as a discussion topic, here ya go:

[This is pure speculation, not confirmed in any way!]

April 29

Depeche Mode, The Strokes, Portishead, Franz Ferdinand, Fatboy Slim, Massive Attack, Infected Mushroom, Royksopp, Kings of Leon, Doves, Sufjan Stevens, Broken Social Scene, Atmosphere, Blackalicious, Super Furry Animals, The Buzzcocks, Primal Scream, Supergrass, Ladytron, DJ Peretz, The Shins, Dieselboy, Tortoise, Sleater Kinney, Richard Hawley, Grooverider, Death From Above 1979, Yesterday's New Quintet, The Walkmen, Son Volt, Will Oldham, The Clientele, Lightning Bolt, Cage, The Crimea, OK Go, Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, John Kelly

April 30

The White Stripes, Roxy Music (featuring Brian Eno), The Arcade Fire, Sigur Ros, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Boards of Canada, Underworld, Ween, Death Cab for Cutie, Armin Van Buuren, Built to Spill, De La Soul, Big Star, Iron & Wine, Uberzone, Happy Mondays, Dinosaur Jr, TV on the Radio, Elbow, Eagles of Death Metal, The Tears, Esthero, T. Rauschmiere, Cat Power, The New Pornographers, Carl Cox, Grandaddy, Calexico, Explosions in the Sky, The Wedding Present, Andy C, Fatlip, DJ Icey, The Notwist and Themselves preforming as 13 & God, Devendra Banhart, The Coral, Stateless, 65 Days of Static

And two other bands which have either been rumored with no specific day attached:

Animal Collective, My Bloody Valentine

I went to Coachella 2005. I'd like to go again. Don't really have the funds. I think I'll just drive to Austin for ACL this year instead.

by this time, yes. it doesn't hurt to try however. to be frankly honest, by this point, you'll be lucky to find anything 5-10 miles from the venue... hotels book FAST.

Though I wouldn't mind doing so, I think I once estimated that going to Coachella costs about a bajillion dollars... Even more than the bajillion that I just spent on moving...

We'll see how the tax return shapes up before giving a definite answer.
