I know that many of you are pet lovers and owners and will find a bit of sympathy when I tell you the following.

Two of my dogs were kidnapped this morning by Animal Control. I was in mid-route to work when I received a frantic phone call from my mother asking where the dogs were. “In the yard…why? What’s going on?” She responded with, “I just saw a guy from Animal Control in the backyard. I think he took Spike and Max!!” What da…?!

Luckily, my sister works for the PD and has city connections. A couple of calls later, we learn that a neighbour had make a “roaming dogs in the street” call. How does that pertain to our dogs who live in a fenced yard? Well, there’s a little dog who lives across the street. His owners don’t take care of him – they let him run around in the street with no collar or tags. Our dogs absolutely hate him. This morning as I was leaving, I found him in my front yard and shooed him away. Of course, when Spike and Max saw him, they immediately ran out, barking and telling him to get the hell out!

As I drove out, I left the gate to my driveway open. I always do. My dogs are trained to not leave the yard and I had no reason to think anyone would come in and just take them. As most things you learn in life, hindsight now informs me that I should’ve closed the gate after seeing “Wee Annoying Dog” (WAD) in the yard. Fuck!

Anyway, I can only assume that WAD was in our yard again. So that when the Animal Control came by to follow up on his roaming dogs call, he saw WAD, my dogs barking and picked them all up (there were four dogs in total – dunno who the other dog is). Pissed off that Animal Control would just take dogs out of people’s yards, I was immediately informed that Animal Control typically knocks on the door of a private residence. Since my mom is disabled, doesn’t hear very well and was more than likely asleep, she probably never heard the knock. AC scooped my pooches and off they went to the slammer!

My poor puppies are old. Spike is almost 13 and Max is 10. Animal Control has informed us that they are gonna be stuck in the truck until 3pm today, when the guy returns to the shelter. That means, they’ll not have had water or food all day long (I had just fed them and am certain they hadn’t had a chance to eat yet). They’re gonna be frantic by the time I pick them up.

I can’t even begin to tell you how upset I am. These are my boys! THEY’RE FAMILY, DAMMIT!

Gotta close that gate. Otherwise, they're fair game. Hope they're safe and happy, though.

oh, wow, sorry to hear this Tania! Yes, I imagine that animal control should have at least knocked on the door, but if your mom couldn't hear/answer the door, they should have left a note or something on your door, or at the very least called. I also completely understand being concerned due to your dogs' ages. Keep us posted... I'm really sorry to hear this happened!

As the happy owner of a pitbull (who is half lame w/ hip problems and pitiful) I understand the sentiment, but it's those people who DON'T lock up their animals who wind up finding toddler bodyparts in Snookum's fur. And those people force the need for an animal control. They can't eyeball your dog and tell it's sweet.

Mine escaped twice from our old house, meandered down the street, and was turned in to the police. Scares the shit out of you. She only left because she got scolded for doing something dumb, and she takes it hard.

I wonder if I'm going to incur some sort of fine. I mean, THEY took them from MY yard! Plus, my mom is disabled. Surely, that counts for something.

Grrrrr!

It'll cost you.

This is a sore subject for me.

Especially on the news from my brother that their neighbor trapped their cat and then Animal Control said it was sick (total bullshit apparently) and despite the cat having one of those identity chips, they didnt even contact them and put the cat down.....They are so pissed and the neibors are ignoring them and refusing to take responsibility.

My next door neighbors cost me $65 by calling animal control when Herschel got out this past summer----the irony is that now they have taken the shock collar off of their dog and he is constantly coming into my yard and barking....I'm thinking about putting a note in their mailbox to the effect of "Even though you weren't adults enough to address your concerns about my dog before calling Animal Control, I'm going to try and be a better person, though having seen your poor parenting regarding those monsters you call children I may have to take more extreme measures regarding your lack of control over your dog"

 That'll get 'em.

That does indeed suck, T. I would also have been stroke-level upset had my dogs been snatched. I hope all works out for you.

Seriously, what the fuck is wrong with people? It's a dog wandering around, not a fucking tiger. If someone did that to me, I'd be taking my dog out at 3am every night to do their business on the neighbor's lawn.

Call the Animal Control folks back over with a fake call, and then open fire.

Do you have the microchip in your dogs? I don't but I think I'm gonna get one injected into Roxie(boxer). A friend of mine had his boxer stolen, and was able to track his down to an illegal dog fighting ring here. They were using the boxers as training partners for the pit bulls. It scares the shit out of me that this could happen to her. Roxie has no sense of danger and is not street smart at all.

I don't understand why they would take them from your yard if they had collars and addys on them? Perhaps I'm misreading something. In any event, I'm hoping they are ok. And also that you are ok.

Yup, they have collars and IDs...and you're right, makes no sense whatsoever.

I'm leaving work in about an hour to get this all sorted out.

I believe the A.C. mindset is "someone called us here, and these dogs could've been out walking around, soooo..."

if you've been gone long enough, maybe.

After spending about an hour and a half at the pound, my doggies are safely home. They're tired and napping, very happy to be back.

I was able to meet with the officer who took them and he informed me that the dogs had chased a couple of strays down to the corner (two houses down). The very scary part was that Spike was almost hit by a car when he ran into the street to chase after WAD. This means no more open gates!

A couple of sidenotes:

You should've seen Spike as he walked out of the kennel. You'd swear the damn dog was struttin' it as he strolled past the others, as if to say..."Yeah, I'm gettin' out and you're not!" That dog has no shame. Made me laugh, though.

There were quite a few Katrina Relief strays -- sweet and friendly. If I didn't already have three dogs, I'd have my name in to adopt one. When I inquired as to their status, one of the officers told me that they had a list of people waiting to adopt them. Made me feel warm and fuzzy to know that someone cared enough.

Thanks for the support, everyone. I'm very glad to have my boys home.

PS -- Due to the officer's kindness, he didn't cite me, however, I did incur a $20 total impound fee. A small price to pay if you ask me.
