for El Duque, Chris Young and Luis Vizcaino.

Chris Young is a can't miss prospect (think Mike Cameron) but this gives the Sox a pretty damn strong six man rotation of Contreras, Buehrle, Garland, Vazquez, Garcia, McCarthy....

Did AZ pocket the cash the Yankees gave them if thats all they got in return? I'd heard that the White Sox were talking about trading Garland for Vasquez but were bulking at no cash.

Could work out well for Sox if they can turn Vasquez around but he's really sucked for the last 1 1/2 years.

It's a no-lose situation if the Sox stand pat. At worst, Vaz is a failed reclamation project. At best, he is a strikeout #2 on a team that desperately needed a strikeout pitcher.

If they got no cash they are paying roughly $11MM/year for a failed reclamation project as your worst case scenario

Yeah, but they also just got a ton of coin from the WS, from merchandising, and from increased season ticket sales so they can afford to gamble a little. You gotta love trader Kenny. Really, what did he give up? Duque (except for that one magical inning in Boston) was pretty damn mediocre/injured last year, Viz was a disaster until August and Chris Young (although a can't miss prospect in all likelihood) is in a farm system STOCKED with OF talent.

Not to mention, the question mark that is Jim Thome's health.

You might as well gamble and sign Jeff Weaver as a free agent too. If you could turn him and Vasquez around and have Contreras, Vasquez and Weaver all performing the way the Yankees had hoped at the top of your rotation, you'd really be pissing me off.

Don Cooper shits gold, so I could see it... except for the Jeff Weaver part.

Not too surprising since Guillen is very familiar with Vazquez from their days together with the Expos. Maybe they'll pick up Ugueth Urbina next, (if he gets his ass out of jail.)

It's not entirely no lose, but its close. On the plus side you're getting rid of a bulky, if not entirely huge contract with el duque, which is good. But you also give up a good prospect in Young and a quality reliever in Vizcaino. That's two solid relievers the team has parted ways with (along with Marte) this winter. One of the strong points on the team this past year was the bullpen, so they need to pull a move or two to fill the gaps left by those departures. Cause as good as Cotts and Jenks and the others are, they can't pitch in every game.

Someone on the Philly message board mentioned he had heard that the Phillies and White Sox could again do business but this time it would be Abreu for McCarthy and prospects.

That's two solid relievers

Check two things:

Vizcaino's April-July 2005 splits.
Marte's 1.71 WHIP for the 2005 season.

Marte is a disaster. If he was right-handed, he'd be out of baseball completely. He tried to QUIT in september last year. Good riddance.

Viz lost us at least THREE games by my count from April-June.

The other prospects would have to be low-mid level prospects for that to happen in my opinion.

Vizcaino was also our most consistent reliever during that terrible stretch we had mid-late season. Marte was worthless.

ESPN1000 is reporting that the Sox and O's are talking about a B-Mac and Uribe for Tejada deal.

I think this moves pressures Garland to sign... like what we just did to Paulie by getting Thome.

The Sox still need another arm in the pen as insurance for Herm and to fill the spots of Marte and Viz.

But he never pitched in pressure situations. Last guy out of the pen can be replaced by Bajeneru.

Also, if Cooper can turn around Contreras... imagine what he can do with Javier. Awesome deal by the best GM in the game.

Well, we have Garcia and Buehrle pitching in the March Tournament... this could also be seen as an insurance move in case one of them gets hurt.

Also, we had a bunch of guys go over 200 IP last year. Ozzie doesn't want to become Dusty Baker Jr. and blow out a ton of arms.

My Royals did for awhile last season, but I'm pretty sure our front office & management team is just a front for some retarded people organization.

BTW - I saw in the si.com "news & rumors" roundup that the Sox are planning on trading Garland. Nothing more detailed than that, though.

What a terrible idea. Baseball is watered down enough as it is.

Source USA Today: http://www.usatoday.com/sports/baseball ... quez_x.htm

The sox are going to get 1/3 of Vazquez Salary picked up. He is due $24 mil over the next two seasons at 11.5 Mil in 06 and 12.5 Mil in 07. The Dbacks are sending $8 Mil to the sox or $4 Mil per year to pay his contract. So in bare net form the sox are going to pay $7.5 Mil in 06 and $8.5 Mil on 07.

There is more. El Duque was owed at least $4.5 Mil in 06 and Viscaino about $1.5 Mil. After adding the $7.5 mil and subtracting the sum of El Duque and Viscaino of $6 Mil it turns out the Sox are only adding $1.5 Mil to the payroll this year for Vazquez. AMAZING!!

Next year Garland and Contreras come off the books so in case on of them does not sign cough Garland cough Vazquez is still a steal at $8.5 Mil on the books for 07. Given the ridiculous price for pithcing in the current market with guys like Burnett getting $11 Mil, Milwood getting $11 Mil, Jaret Wright getting $7 Mil, Kenny Rogers getting $8 Mil we should be extatic we are paying Vazquez less than market value at $7.5 and $8.5 Mil.

WAY TO GO KENNY!!
