Brother (younger). His tastes are basically the following:
- Jack Johnson
- Sublime
- B. Marley
- Beastie Boys
- Eminem

Friend: Some of his tastes
- Mountain Goats
- Weakerthans
- Wolf Parade/Arcade Fire/BSS
- the post rock-y stuff (mogwai, eits, sigur ros)

Particularly in the case of my brother I need suggestions that deviate away from the typical top 40 crap... but not too weird for fear he will reject
My friend has got much better and diverse taste. I am just little stuck...

suggestions please?!?!

Younger Brother. How younger?

Try Ike Reilly. Solid rock and roll with a piss-poor attitude to match and some of his hooks and lyrics definitely reflect an admiration of hip-hop without venturing into the Rap-Rock category of Limp Bizkit or Crazytown.

My personal favorite is Sparkle in the Finish, but Salesmen and Racists is very good as well. This year's Junkie Faithful is a solid record, but it's more introspective and subdued.

for your little brother i would suggest:
m ward
mason jennings
gregory isaacs
a tribe called quest

what beastie boys albums does he like? if he's a paul's boutique fan i'd recommend some other dust brothers productions... could be a nice segue into beck.

It seems like Matisyahu would be perfect for your brother, but who isn't freaked out by a beatboxing jewstafarian?

I have no idea -- Avalanches? Streets? Peter Gabriel? (The latter only because he is "big" yet "cool".)

get the friend some Decoder Ring, if you can find any that is. It's Aussie post-rock, much like Mogwai, and pretty darn good too.

http://www.decoderring.com.au/

or Because of Ghosts, another fucking great Aussie post rock band. Kinda like a cross between Dirty Three and Mogwai.

Then there's Dirty Three - Cinder, which would be much easier to track down given your locale.
