U2, the Pretenders, Buddy Guy, Percy Sledge, and the O'Jays will be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame at its 20th annual induction ceremony, to be held March 14 at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel in New York.

i'm just disappointed knowing who's eligible. i pretty much figured u2 would make it, first time eligible.
:x

I actually think that's a pretty good induction list.

You goddamn right. Each of their album covers should be blown up real biglike and given it's own wing for current and future generations to admire and enjoy. And then beat off.

I don't think they have a chance in hell. Not that they aren't deserving.

First off, great signature....

second, why do you think that? of course, its done by a 'panel' and who knows what their criteria for induction really is...

but based on pure musical standards, The Cure really have all the qualities to be immortalized. Godfather of a genre....influenced tons of bands over the years. sold lots of records....longevity....respect....

why shouldnt they be?

Like I said, TK, they ARE deserving. Based on musical standards alone... they get in.

I just think for a British band to make it in they have to be HUGE-Zeppelin, Who, Beatles, Floyd.

I think the Cure were extremely important to a particular generation of Americans, but, don't have the overall appeal for the people(whoever the hell they are) that make the decisions as to who gets in. I don't think the Smiths will ever get in either for similar reasons.

Hope I'm wrong, though.

Steve

You know, my husband always says this whenever he has more than 2 empty beer bottles in his hand, of course he clinks them together with the necks on his fingertips... alas, I've never seen the film.

Funny! Actually, there is another memorable line from that film. Try this one out on hubby....

"Can-you-dig it?"

I believe the album covers you are thinking of belong to The Ohio Players, who are also a good band, though not as great as The O'Jays.

Music: O'Jays over Ohio Players

Album Covers: Ohio Players over O'Jays.

I wouldn't marry a girl unless she's seen it. It only makes sense being that my framed Warriors poster will be hanging in our casa del amor

That would be Bill Ward, who secretly controls all of rock and roll from a console hidden in his broom closet.

Godddammit. I need some sleep. I'm a dolt. They should induct them all. Hell, all them motherfuckers is from Ohio though. O'Jays, Ohio Players, The Isley Brothers, Lakeside, Dazz Band and Heatwave. There's probably even more.

Steve makes a great point. If Sabbath can't even get in, the Cure doesn't have a chance.

As much as I think U2 are deserving, they've always been critical favorites with all manner of press in the U.S. Journalists and industry hacks secretly believe there's a bit of Bono in all of them and the band's image has been sufficiently epic that not including them would fly glaringly against how the hall has always operated. Whereas, I doubt many voters secretly feel they're a bit Robyn Hitchcock or Robert Smith.

There are many bands who have never been perceived as "rock" weighty, even if their impact was very weighty. And the truth of the matter is that Smith has a strange voice, even if we're all used to it. The Hall doesn't like weird voices that are non-rock weird. Dylan-weird, yeah. Frank Black-weird, no.

Zappa couldn't be ignored because he was foundational to "weird." But subsequent Sonic Youth "weird" can be marginalised because the Hall is firmly established and somewhat canonized.

It's arguable that if the Clash don't hit top 10 with Rock The Casbah and Should I Stay Or Should I Go weren't blasted by classic rock radio for the last 10 years, they wouldn't have gotten in either...despite the fawning over London Calling.

Probably still would have...but

Methinks O'Jays are from Philly -- Gamble & Huff, yo!

I think I still have the "Love Train" 45 around somewhere. I'm assuming that's probably not the O'Jays' best work...
