I once wanted to move to NYC (I still think it is the coolest city on earth barely beating out London). But now I really love Atlanta. I came up with this little list of US coolest cities. This is not scientific at all just based on my perceptions and knowledge of night life/music/sports/culture/people/history etc. This is how I feel about US cities (big ones) and their importance to the US. Tell me how full of shit I am and how all ATLiens have a false sense of self confidence.

Tier 1
1. NYC
2. LA
3. Chicago

Tier 2
4. San Francisco
5. DC
6. Boston

Tier 3
7. Atlanta
8. Miami
9. Philadelphia
10. New Orleans

Tier 4
11. Seattle
12. San Diego
13. Dallas
14. Detroit

Yeah I might have ranked it higher otherwise.

Oh shit, this could be incendiary..

Personally I rank the A #1, Seattle #2 and San Diego #3 but that is all based on personal choice. Shit, eveybody knows that NYC is the shit if you can do it and I've been led to believe that Chicago is dope as welll....a lot of cshit is based on personal pref.

Yeah, but visiting and living are two different things and even places like Pheonix (and Houston, even) are much better than NO or Detroit.

How is Detroit compared to Memphis?

I tend to see lots of similarities between Memphis and Baltimore.

My thoughts exactly. Some friends of mine live right on the Detroit river, just down the street from the mayor. Big, fancy mansions, but across the street is an empty lot with a tree that has crime scene tape wrapped around it. That's Detroit. Give me Memphis, or Nashville, or hell ... give me Cincy over that.

Never been to Baltimore, but Memphis and Detroit are fairly similar as far as white-flight is concerned. Lots of sprawl, little infrastructure. But I'd say Memphis (especially downtown) has more going for it.

Chicago is an amazing city... just don't think I could deal with the winters there. I also really enjoyed Boston when I visited a couple of years ago. Never been to NYC, but any city that allows me to get wherever the hell I want without a car (like Chicago, like London) is aces in my book.

Atlanta is fun and great esp. for someone like me who grew up in the 'burbs, but after spending my college/post-college years there, I was ready for a change. Clearly this is only my opinion. It's fun to go back and visit friends/family, but there's not much I miss about it. I don't miss sitting in rush hour traffic for 1-2 hours. I don't miss the crappy MARTA system. I don't miss the 8% sales tax. I don't miss the carjackings and break-ins. I don't miss the 45 minute drive regardless of where you're going. I don't miss the urban sprawl. I don't miss the smoggy days of summer. I don't miss having to pay the enormous AC bill every summer (or having to have AC to begin with).

I really love the Pacific Northwest. Portland housing is still expensive, but not quite as expensive as Seattle or SF. No sales tax in Oregon, so that's always a plus. I feel comfortable here. But then again, I'm in the "older obner" demographic, and things I might find important may differ from someone who's younger. That said, I would never include LA, Detroit, Atlanta, Miami, or Philadelphia in my top cities to live in. Texas in general doesn't appeal to me at all.

Memphis is like 137 miles of outskirts with a river for decoration. It also has a "West" which is actually located in ArkanGar. Being from the territory, I'm sure you're familiar.

I've never actually been to Detroit but I hear the best parts are in Canada.

Edit: And oh, most of my knowledge of B-more is from The Wire--I've driven through, but it might as well have been KC, St Louis, Nashville or a million other cities where I got to peep a sports venue from the main interstate.

West Memphis is not far from Forrest City, named after Nathan Bedford. And it has a Dog Track.

Dnorwood I am not talking about places to live necessarily. I also consider Portland to small to be what I am exactly talking about.

The burbs suck everywhere that is why I live in the city. It is a little violent. Last week I was at a bar where somebody outside got shot in the arm. And of Bloor nearly got jacked.

Yeah, I used to drive to West Memphis because it had the closest Wal-Mart (I lived on the river). There is NO better people-watching opportunity than West Memphis Wal-Mart at 3am. Oh my God, I could write a concept album just about the characters in there . . . wait, an idea!

ah, okay, I stand corrected. Your referencing wanting to move to NYC once gave me the impression you were talking about places to live.

I like my 'burbs, because I'm a half-hour drive from either Baltimore or DC. We get two of everything.

See, you and cotton are in that strange stretch of highway where every 1-2 hours or so, you hit a big city.

Gimme 4.5-5 hours driving time and I can be in:
Baltimore
DC
Richmond
Philadelphia
New York
Pittsburgh
Anywhere on the Atlantic Ocean from Virginia Beach to Long Island
and West Virginia
