Well, all that I've heard are worth getting, but this is the one I just bought. It's both majestic and odd:

Oh, man, FSA are so underappreciated. Easily my all-time-favorite-band-that-nobody-else-gives-a-shit-about. That said, New Lands is a pretty far cry from their best work, and I don't think all that indicative of what they were originally reaching for. It was a later album, recorded after Rachel Brook left for Moviefone, and the liner notes actually refer to it as FSA's "Phase II."

Easily the next place to go from Further is the self-titled debut from '94-- much, much noisier than a lot of their folkier other stuff, and includes a cover of Suede's "The Drowners" that vastly improves on the original (for my money, anyway-- I'm not a huge Suede fan).

My preference for their discography goes:

1 Further
2 Flying Saucer Attack
3 Distance
4 Sally Free & Easy EP
5 New Lands
6 Goodbye (w/Roy Montgomery)

...and of course, the awkward drum-n-bass/noise experiment Mirror doesn't even make the list. You may, however, want to check Clear Horizon, which Kranky released late last year-- especially if the noisier FSA stuff is too intense. It's FSA's Dave Pearce with drone/dream-pop artist Jessica Bailiff, and it comes pretty close to FSA's glory days while bringing the accessible folky undercurrent of the old stuff to the fore and backgrounding a lot of the distortion and noise.

Blasphemy, thought I like their wall of noise approach to the song. It’s missing the intent of the song, which is built up sexual tension. This was the first single Suede ever released and you add “My Insatiable One” to the mix you just had to think that Brett Anderson had to be gay. You add Bernard Butler’s guitar licks just going off in the back round, made for a great debut.

I always liked how FSA always said something like “CDs Destroy Music, buy Vinyl.” I’m going to have to dig out some of their CDs again as I know I own your 1-3 albums by them.

Welcome Rp4rk but I had to stick up for my boys.

Fair enough. For the record, I prefer the more positive message on the spine of Further: "Home taping is reinventing music."
