But I'm going to go with the pixies. How could this not be a poll choice?

Because in the best light it's their third best album, and I think it's actually their weakest by a country mile.

I don't know if I would've put Bossanova on the poll list either, but I don't understand why an album's ranking in the band's own discography should have any bearing on how it ranks against albums by other bands in a best-of-the-year poll. I mean, the 3rd best Pixies album is still head and shoulders above anything by Depeche Mode or Ride.

Bingo.

I hate to co-opt a Loogism, but even what some consider a weak pixies record is still miles above what most consider a great (almost anybody else) record. And that's not blind devotion. I reserve that kinda talk for about 2 bands... beatles, pixies. I feel they both earned it, and am willing to wear the Captain Obvious badge if it needs wearing. There's a tendency to downplay truly good stuff if, after a while, it's well-known that it was really good. That's neither fair nor their faults.

Wouldn't you say you are in the minority for considering Bossanova among the Pixies best? I would even go further and predict that more people on the board prefer Trompe over Bossanova. I know I do personally. Coming off of Doolittle, I'm not sure how Bossanova could be construed as anything other than a disappointment of sorts.

Part of this poll is also trying to cater to the board's interests, which is why albums like "Nowhere" and "Violator" are included. I'm nearly certain all of the 9 entries will get votes, and to be fair, I've had to vote other at least 5 times (including this year) because I refrained from putting my favorite album of the year on the poll. I left it off the list because while it may be among my personal favorites, it's not among the consensus best albums of the year.

In my mind, the poll only fails under two simultaneous conditions, 40% or more voting other and the majority of those other votes going to a single release. In those cases I usually have Haq change the poll to reflect the interests.

And yes, I will have included 6 Bowie albums, 5 Dylan albums, 5 or 6 Stones albums and 5 Beatles albums in these polls, so making the argument that it's the "third best Pixies album at best" is a weak one. However, if you look back on those polls, you'll see that more than a couple people voted for all of those albums, so it wasn't as though I was just tooting my own horn.

I do think it's the Pixies worst however, and I know I'm not alone in that, and I'm not including what I believe to be a band's worst album on a poll where over 100 albums deserve consideration.

I've got such a fondness for this record it's unreal. Everything about it just seems to click, for little explainable reason. It's all over the map, style-wise, but it all gels anyway.

I get you. My motivation is looking at the poll, then weighing Bossanova in one hand and each of the poll options in the other. It's heavier than most of them, for me. I would also guess that I, too, am not alone in that assumption, but at the end of the day:

1. It's just a poll.
2. It's asking for opinion.
3. Somebody else made it.

In a sense, posting the poll is asking for thoughts. Those were mine.

it's cool, I think the poll works best when there's controversy (which is why the mid 60s threads are so damn uninteresting). Mind you, I'm not trying to be overly defensive although lord knows I come off that way sometimes.

also, one thing I was thinking about asking haq do when this was all said and done was change the ones that got zero votes to ones that actually got votes, although that may be far too cumbersome.

And "Music For The Masses" kicks "Violater"'s ass by a country mile IMHO.

Not a great moment for sure, but I can pull a crap song off of every Pixies album.

The point is that Black Francis lo-fi screaming on "Bone Machine" or "Vamos" do not a great rekkid make. Get over it.

What was your entry point for the Pixies? I think this has a lot to do with what one likes about this band.

Haven't heard his name in a long time-
Played several gigs with Andy when he was part of the local SF music scene circa 80-81 when he fronted a band called 'Eye Protection'.
Nice fella'

Mine was truly Trompe, as it was the first one I bought and listened to a million times, although I had heard Doolittle and Surfer Rosa since 1989 when I was out cruising with friends. I'm sentimental about Trompe as a result. Bossanova was the last one I heard.

Good question ?
I remember him leaving for LA and that was last we ever heard from him.
I do remember two things -
>Dude had stage presence...(so yes, made to be a rock-star)
>Chicks were all ova him like a duck on a junebug

Wow. I would take Bone Machine over anything on Bossanova.

Pretty much disappeared after "Sins Of Our Fathers". I really wish Wall of Voodoo could have done a creditable follow-up to "Seven Days In Sammystown". Prieboy's vocals work extremely well on that record, it's a far cry from the vaudeville-style romps of his two solo records.
