I have slightly over 20 I like even if I expect that I won't be recommending them to anyone in a couple of years. I still like 'em much more than the other stuff I see people praising so I have no problems voting for them.

I'm waiting on Max's list and then I am going to check out every disc on it. We seem to have really similar tastes.

Yeah it is pretty great. Even better than Three. I think its his song structures that really draw me to him.

Unless I get a shit-ton of recent tunes for stinkmas, I don't think I have a big enough sample to participate. But I will watch the results closely.

Right now it's being taught what's cool by the Americans, so it can turn around and sell it back with a more stylish haircut.

Not sure how I'll feel about Magic Time in a few years. It's better than his skiffle albums, but certainly no Astral Weeks. Right now I like it quite a bit (only had it a couple of weeks), but that might just be sentiment toward the Van. It's certainly not a #1 and I could have put 15 or so other releases in its place.

The Kate Bush one is sedate and reflective, more a texture suite on domestic life than anything theatrical. The first half is song-based, the second is concept, somewhat the way Hounds Of Love was. It's rewarding to pay attention to, but there are spots more about tone than "song" and a few seem important to her but might leave listeners saying things like "why are you laughing at birds in this song, again?"

It's insular in context and content but performed in a joyously expansive manner. It's the mark of someone who hasn't had much worry about music industry expectations for a good deal of time.

Some tracks I like better than others. "Sunset" for instance. Much of Aerial is reflective, but there's the occasional Dreaming-style oddity like "Mrs. Bartolozzi."

"Sunset" (I'll YSi a couple other tracks later)

There's nothing on the album that isn't steeped in pleasantry, though. There's no "Violin" or "Get Out Of My House, or "Wedding List" or "James & The Cold Gun" anger. Some people might think the album's boring. I just find her all grown up and rather enjoy that she's capable of writing pretty songs about tiny things.

UK Bands In My Top Twenty

2003: 8

2004: 11

2005: 10

There are plenty good bands in the UK but the opportunities for them to get any recognition are steadly contracting. John Peel was enormously importance and now he's gone.

The weekly music papers are all dead now except the NME which has had to adopt only the most bland commercial music to survive.

Basically there's no one to get the word out anymore and where as Brits are always keeping a close eye on the US (you could list loads of US bands that took off in the UK before they were successful at home), I don't really think the reverse of that is true.

I've only heard 21 full albums from this year so this list was no problem. I just didn't include Bright Eyes' postal service album.

I did have to add six albums to the charts, though. That was a pain.

alongdrive's list

1. Eels – Blinking Lights And Other Revelations
2. Fiona Apple – Extraordinary Machine
3. Antony And The Johnsons – I Am A Bird Now
4. The Boy Least Likely To – The Best Party Ever
5. Petra Haden – Sings: The Who Sell Out
6. Sufjan Stevens – Illinois
7. Iron & Wine – Woman King [EP]
8. Final Fantasy – Has A Good Home
9. The Weekend – Beatbox My Heartbeat
10. Broken Social Scene – s/t
11. Bright Eyes – I’m Wide Awake, It’s Morning
12. The Most Serene Republic – Underwater Cinematographer
13. Joel Plaskett – La De Da
14. Hot Hot Heat – Elevator
15. Jason Collett – Idols of Exile
16. Sun Kil Moon – Tiny Cities
17. Hugh Dillon Redemption Choir – The High Cost of Low Living
18. Madonna – Confessions On A Dance Floor
19. Beck – Guero
20. Grandaddy – Excerpts From The Diary of Todd Zilla

And, if need be, use Sen. Loogar's OPEN GARBAGE as a placeholder in the slots you can't fill.
