anyone who brushes them off as a one hit wonder is obviously an idiot, so i say let it begin so i can seperate the wheat from the chaff.

You're correct. One hit, not a wonder.

I wish they had released that other (earlier) version of "Float On" that Spade Kitty and I liked.

I could care less about the "one hit wonder" label, but it's always sad when bands hit it big with their worst album.

Have they turned up on a "Now" compilation yet?

If they only song they ever recorded was "Doin' The Cockroach", I'd still be a huge fan.

Throughout the history of rock charts there are hundreds of so-called one-hitters (or two or three hitters) whose catalogs are filled with interesting songs that few paid attention to. From Todd Rundgren and Nick Lowe to acts like Everything But The Girl, Chumbawamba, Sixpence None The Richer and Fountains Of Wayne, having a monster hit that's not representative of your overall sound can damage respect non-chart peoples might otherwise have for you if they didn't assume your hit was what all your other songs sound like.

It's a double-edged sword sometimes. Pop people don't care about your other songs and many non-pop people assume your other songs aren't worth checking out because they thought your hit was dumb.

I'm not really sure why you quoted me, frosted, so I feel the need to explain that I liked 3 or 4 Modest Mouse albums and EPs that came out before this album.

Possibly because I'm fairly drunk, but more likely because I agreed with you

I can live with that. I was a little confused because I don't think "Float On" is a huge change from their past work, but the album as a whole was hugely disappointing.

I'll admit, the whole "Stacy's Mom" thing had me dismissing Fountains of Wayne, even though I had heard good things about them before. What CD is more definitive of their work?

I like all three of their albums and the b-sides/unreleased one from this year. But Utopia Parkway is probably best.

I prefer their self-titled debut.

Exactly. As long as the residuals checks maintain, moreso maybe the band gets the song on a soundtrack to a film, then Isaac Brock will be able to keep himself in bathtub-crank, cocaine, and High Life. Win all-'round then.
