Ol' Nick-where art thou? Did someone kidnap the real Nick Cave after 'Boatman's Call'? People are too easily pleased these days-the last thing Mr. Cave needs is to be surrounded by grinning sycophants drooling over every fart he expels. Where are the characters-where is the drama-where is the romance-where is the deep rumbling voice.......anyone else had a gutful of kittens and mittens? We want JESUS-oh yes! We want BLOOOD-ooooh yes!!! We want FIRE, RAINSTORMS, KILLING, DEPRESSION, STALKING, FISTING, BAD GOD, CRAZY STRANGERS IN TOWN, HAMMOND ORGANS AND FOAMING AT THE MOUTH-WE WANT 'OL NICK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Come on people. This thread comes Konstant approved. Perkele is new and is feeling a little rejected. In fact he's in my office now whining my face off. He's using words like "clique".

So let's see some response eh? There must be more than one Nick Cave fan on the board.

Perk, I would comment but I'm not really familiar with his work. Just one of those artists I have put off getting into. I have always heard that Boatman and Nocturama were good rekkids.

I know a few people on here really like the new one though.

Oh and welcome.

Heya Perkele!
I can certainly see your dilema. The "new" Nick Cave is, indeed a kinder, gentler creature than the man who brought us The Good Son or Murder Ballads. However, I do not think he is a lesser creature.

Nocturama, while not a perfect album, certainly has some great high points. And what I've hear of the new double-release, frankly, has blown me away. (It's #1 on my "to-buy" list)

But like I said, while I still love what Nick is doing, I can certainly see your dilema and even empathize with it. The thing is... I, myself am a kinder, gentler PopTodd than I used to be. So I find myself ageing with Mr. Cave, and enjoying it quite a bit.

Welcome to the board!

I didn't care for Nocturama either. The new double album is fantastic, however, and will make a great showing on my best of list.

Like the others have said, people change. Some artists don't want to just grind out the same old shit for 20 years.

Everyone can't be the Ramones(who I love btw)

You all must have missed this: http://obner.org/bb/viewtopic.php?t=1645

Not hard, seeings what a dumb title it had, and it's buried on page 4 already.

If you people would put the artist in the title, it might get more views/posts from like-minded folk.

Sorry Perk, but...coherence? Not exactly the most lucid thread starter.

Oh, and I didn't answer the poll because none of them accurately reflected my feelings. I don't feel Nick Cave was kidnapped (nor was his id), but Nocturama was definitely not the Bee's Knees.

I missed Nocturana, but I just picked up his latest 2 disc set and am really enjoying it. He has mellowed considerably it seems, especially on stuff like No More Shall We Part, but the first disc of his latest has more intensity than I've heard outta the guy for quite some time. Have ya heard that one yet? It may be just what you are hoping for.

When artist change and make different types of records... or allow certain facets of personality to come to the forefront - I'm intrigued. In the case of Liz Phair, I was horrified. But in the case of Nick Cave, I've been pleasantly surprised to follow each album since. I loved Nocturama - and the new double offering seems even more ambitious and lovely.

God is In the Hizzouse.

Very true - I skip past 90 % of threads with really ambiguous titles. Gimme SOME idea of what I'm looking at is about.

As far as Cave goes, I kinda like that "There She Goes My Beautiful World" song.

Didn't get Nocturama, but pretty stoked about the new one.

Still, yeah, he's not the Nick Cave he used to be. If he were, he'd be a caricature, but I get that you miss that guy. Sorry, dude. And welcome.

I went ahead and added that elusive D. I should know more Nick Cave than I do.

I'm not a big Nick Cave fan. I like him well enough, I guess - and from what I've heard the new stuff is equal to (or greater than) his earlier work - but I've never felt the slightest urge to buy one of his albums since Let Love In.

<--- didn't vote either.

Hello folks. Sorry some thought my post was incoherent, if you tell me in what way it was incoherent and didn't satisfy your needs as a first post I'll make sure it doesn't happen again (cough!).

Just wondered what other folks were thinking about the new Nick Cave stuff. I can't make up my mind. It's different, that's for sure......do I like it?-maybe ;-) Will I allow myself to like it.......convince me? Just seems that a lot of the fantastic characters and stories are gone, not to mention the deep, deep, deep voice which has been replaced with an often strained sounding croak; those of you who know note 'God Is In the House. Does it matter? Maybe not.

Totally.

Most Nick Cave fans agree Nocturama was not his strongest, (some say it's his worst), Abattoir Blues/Lyre of Orpheus however is in no way in the same category. Have you actually listened to it? Yes some of it is actually--gasp--happy, but I think there's still quite a lot of fire & brimstone in there. I think it's brilliant.

OK, I'm back and have finished translating your stuff.

You are pretty darn good at writing Finnish if you are Scottish. How long have you beed studying? My wife is Finnish and she is teaching our son, so I am learning along with him, although, I think he is picking it up faster, haha.

Oh, BTW, I'm sorry that I'm not too familiar with Nick Cave. ;)

I just had to ask about you being Finnish since I know perkele and thought it wasn't a coincidence.

Well, it's just that it took me a read or two to get what the question was.

OTOH, don't change on my account. Once I get used to your style, I'm sure I'll keep up much better (if I like you, or ignore you entirely if I don't).

Tim: Been studying for around 1 year. hoping to move to Finland soonish, so have to get good. You should start a Finnish thread sometime.

Well, sorry didn't put enough options on the poll: I was just mucking around really. Nocturama was a bit pish really though for me, but I think what is really missing is the vocal style of old. I don't even mind happy lyrics or happy songs (shock horror!!) it's just the delivery I reckon is lacking something (maybe?). Songs seem more personal now, less myhtical too.

Just wondered what some other people thought-simple as that. Thanks for letting me know.

Like other respondants, I can't pick any of the poll choices because, even though Nocturama is one of his weakest efforts, Abattoir Blues/The Lyre Of Orpheus is one of his strongest. So I can't answer the poll.

Actually, I went back and revisited Nocturama, and it's really not so bad.

Dusty Chalk/fidelespoon: you really think the newer stuff sits well with what are popularly considered to be the classics? I would agree have moments, some of the magic is gone though it seems. Do you notice a change in vocal style? Sorry if you think I'm kind of dragging this out and labouring a point.........it's just been bugging me, then Kostntinl introduced to Obner, then I bug you people ;-)
