Should I get the remix version that's supposed to be even nastier-sounding?

I've got an out-takes album that's pretty great. You can't touch the original, though--it's perfect (not a work I throw around lightly).

Side 1 is the best album side ever made. It is the "Detroit" album. "Down On The Street" is like sitting at a red light in a ridiculously over-powered American muscle car. The idle is just nasty as the song growls along, building for about 35 seconds, then light changes and it's wide open throttle.

"Loose" cooks along, building speed and force.

By the time the primal scream opens "TV Eye" it's all hell bent, unbridled, ain't nothin' gonna stop it. "TV Eye" is the reason you want the original version, it capture the opening scream better than *any* of the demos I've heard.

Honestly I haven't really listened to Fun House either. I'm odd in the fact that I like the Stooges - S/T and don't really care for Raw Power. So that kind of kept me away from Fun House. So would Fun House appeal to me?

I'm really surprised not to see Syd Barrett -- THe Madcap Laughs on your list. The Who -- Live at Leeds and Jimi Hendrix -- Band of Gypsys are other big omissions.

I think Lola vs the Powerman isn't even top five Kinks. I also think Let It Be, Derek & the Dominos, and Simon & Garfunkel don't really belong up there given the strength of this year.

Other Ommissions:

Antonio Adolfo & A Brazuca -- Antonio Adolfo E A Brazuca (1970)
Tim Maia -- Tim Maia (1970)
Doris Monteiro -- Doris Monteiro (1970)
Jorge Ben -- Forca Bruta
Ze Roberto Bertrami & Projecto III -- Encontro
James Brown -- Soul On Top
Brute Force -- Brute Force
Gal Costa -- Legal
Joao Donato -- Bad Donato
Charles Earland -- Black Talk!
Bill Fay -- Bill Fay
Eddie Gale -- Black Rhythm Happening
Harlem River Drive -- Harlem River Drive
Donny Hathaway -- Everything Is Everything
Lee Hazlewood -- Requiem For An Almost Lady
Marcos Valle -- Marcos Valle (1970)
The Grodeck Whipperjenny Project -- The Grodeck Whipperjenny Project
Linda Perhacs -- Parrallelograms
Meic Stevens -- Outlander
Twink -- Think Pink
Vashti Bunyan -- Just Another Diamond Day
Joni Mitchell -- Ladies of the Canyon
Stephen STills -- Stephen Stills
THe Move -- Shazam
Meters - Look-ka-py-py
Temptations - Psychedelic Soul
Aretha Franklin -- Spirit in the Dark
Kris Kristofferson -- Kristofferson
Traffic -- John Barleycorn Must Die
The Who -- Live at Leeds
Van Morrison -- Moondance
Van Morrison -- His Band and The Street Choir
Randy Newman -- 12 songs
Spirit - Twelve Dreams of Dr. Sardonicus
The Band -- Stage Fright
The Last Poets - The LAst Poets

For me, It comes down to Donny Hathaway or Neil Young

Madcap Laughs is 1969, Barrett is 1970. I do not include live albums in the poll - that's been a longstanding rule. Otherwise, you would've seen many more before now.

I don't think of Muswell Hillbillies as being top 5 Kinks myself, whereas Lola is my favorite Kinks album.

Band of Gypsys - good album, would get zero votes on this poll IMO.

I don't think of Muswell Hillbillies as top five either.

Also, what do you have against Nick Drake. Not saying you have to include him, but picking Simon & Garfunkel over him seems crazy to me.

It is all about personal tastes, cos these are head and above my 2 faves. I did not know that about Live albums, Spade, but I didn't vote other, so no harm no foul.

I think I included Pink Moon in whatever year it came out, so obviously I can't have too much against him. Five Leaves Left really puts me to sleep, so maybe that was a conscious oversight. I'm just not at all familiar with Bryter Later. I know people here really like it, so I anticipated some other votes for it too.

I could've sworn Madcap Laughs was 1969, but I'll take your word for it. I may have voted for that one over Kinks. Hmmm.

I figured you would put in a mention for ya-yas, and I will agree that it is a fantastic album. That's not surprising to me that Muswell is up there for you (or Lola). For some reason I like it when the Kinks straddled the line between British and American influences (Lola) as opposed to when they went whole-hog Americana (Muswell)

AMG says Madcap Laughs was recorded in 1968-9, but was released Jan 3, 1970 so maybe you were thinking of the recording dates rather than release date.

Didn't remember you including Pink Moon but I'll take your word for it. I like both Five Leaves Left and Bryter Lyter more than Pink Moon though.

I'm not complaining. I'm perfectly capable of voting other and wouldn't vote for either this year anyway. I was just curious.

I went with VU, Loaded as my number 1, just barely edging out The Stooges. But yeah, what a great year. Other notables for me:

Van Morrison * Moondance
Neil Young - After the Gold Rush
Led Zeppelin III
The Doors * Morrison Hotel
Derek and the Dominos - Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs

Has anyone heard the new, deluxe remastered Funhouse? I've been debating whether I should order it or not.

That's a really good list though. Nice to see some bill fay love. I think "Time of the Last Persecution" may be 1970 as well which I even like more. It didn't pop up on my search and I was too lazy to do more digging.

I always look for Mcap's votes in these threads, as his knowledge of the JAIL REKKIDS back catalogue is rivaled on;y by Radcliffe.

Creedence Clearwater Revival is one of the highest regarded American bands of the 60s/early 70s but completely invisible on this board. In 1970, they had 2 good albums--Cosmo's Factory and Pendulum.

The Beach Boys are seemingly more of an indie favorite and Sunflower from this year is one of their better albums. You can get it at BMG on a twofer with Surf's Up, Pitchfork's favorite (on their best of 70's list).

In soul, I nominate Swamp Dogg - Total Destruction To Your Mind

Better warn the FEMBLOOR to let the medication takes its course before resuming normal bedroom activity, then.
