only eight more polls left, by the way. The order of the remaining eight has pretty much been decided. I haven't decided, however, whether or not I'm taking tomorrow off, but Monday's off for sure.

not as baffled as my wife who loves the wall (and bristles at any floyd/radiohead comparisons). i also don't think this was a great year.

as far as vs genesis, i just don't see how the wall is so much more celebrated than the lamb (which came 5 years earlier). the lamb is both more catchy and more complex.

I've never really felt the need to explore early (pre-Collins singing) Genesis...I love The Wall for what it is -- shit to take acid to and feel all cool when you're 16 ;)

Mother is great song tho.

are you trying to finish these polls by 2005? if so, you might need to double-up.

Nope. I could if I did one every single day, but on the weekends and on holidays this place is a dead zone and I'd rather have a captive audience. Plus, with the poll going off every weekday, I think people need a couple days off from it every week (including me!)

The target date for the final poll is Friday January 6th.

Seriously now, Loogs, if you haven't already you've gotta take a listen to the A's, the Buzzards, the Cramps, the Fabulous Poodles, Marianne Faithful, Ellen Foley, Ian Hunter, the Inmates, the Iron City Houserockers, Jo Jo Zep and the Falcons, Jules and the Polar Bears, the Reds, the Suburbs, Teenage Head, Bruce Wooley and the Camera Club, Wreckless Eric, Stiff Little Fingers, the Specials, Nick Lowe, Graham Parker & the Rumor, the Only Ones, the Undertones, Rickie Lee Jones, the Dickies, and the Suicide Commandos. There's no brittle, yelping "dance punk" going on in any of 'em - and you will shit your pants over how good those bands are.

I went with London Calling. Others in very close contention:

Elvis Costello and the Attractions * Armed Forces
Joy Division * Unknown Pleasures
Public Image Ltd. * Metal Box/Second Edition
AC/DC * Highway to Hell
Motorhead * Overkill
Neil Young * Rust Never Sleeps
Pink Floyd * The Wall

One album I don't get all the love for is Gang of Four's Entertainment. I listened to that earlier this year after eons of reading about how incredible it is. I was disappointed to say the least. I've tried to listen a couple of more times and I guess I don't get it.

Keep in mind that not only did Nick Lowe release Jesus Of Cool that year, but he also PRODUCED Elvis' Armed Forces! Helluva year for The Basher.

Probably the single most important year for my musical development. I'm voting London Calling, but all of these listed below are hugely impoortant records in my little universe...

Wire - 154
Joy Division - Unknown Pleasures
Gang of Four - Entertainment
The Jam - Setting Sons
Stiff Little Fingers - Inflammable Material
Elvis Costello - Armed Forces
The Cure - Boys Don't Cry
Talking Heads - Fear of Music
Gary Numan - Replicas and The Pleasure Principle
The Specials
Marianne Faithful - Broken English
XTC - Drums & Wires
Joe Jackson - Look Sharp & I'm the Man
Tom Petty - Damn the Torpedoes
Graham Parker - Squeezing Out Sparks
The B-52s
Madness - One Step Beyond
The Members - at the Chelsea Nightclub
Rickie Lee Jones
The Undertones
Magazine - Second Hand Daylight
Neil Young Rust Never Sleeps
The Cramps - Songs the Lord Taught Us
The Pretenders
Wreckless Eric - The Whole Wide World
The Yachts

even The Wall, which I bought and anticipated for so long and even enjoyed for a few months, but which I have grown to dislike like few other albums I know.

Edit: How did I foget PiL's Metal Box.

I find this curious, which SLF album did make your Listmania?, Nobody's Heroes, I'm guessing. Myself, I have a soft spot for Go For It.

Yeah, me too.

Voted for E. Costello, although it's super close between that, Gang of Four, and XTC - Drums and Wires (and Spade, you should at least hear this as far as XTC is concerned - much, much better than Skylarking IMO and very different).

Rough list:

1. E. Costello - Armed Forces
2. GoF - Entertainment!
3. XTC - Drums & Wires
4. PiL - Metal Box
5. Wire - 154
6. David Bowie - Lodger
7. Talking Heads - Fear of Music
8. This Heat
9. The B-52s
10. The Cure - Three Imaginary Boys

^ all classic

also great:

Magazine - Secondhand Daylight
Neil Young - Rust Never Sleeps
Devo - Duty Now for the Future
Throbbing Gristle - 20 Jazz Funk Greats

I'm not even all that crazy about some of its most celebrated albums (Pink Floyd, The Clash, Joy Division, Pop Group), but this is still clearly an amazing year.

Joe's Garage as well.

If I voted "Other" I'd take one of these, but I'll vote "London Calling"

# 1 - bill nelson's red noise - sound on sound

xtc - drums and wires (great record - and my first taste of the boys from Swindon, but take this record, multiply it by a 1000 and you're still nowhere near the 'Black Sea')

secret affair - the glory boys

the undertones - the undertones

the dickies -" incredible shrinking"....and "dawn of".... ("I'm a Chollo what can I do")
RIP Chuck Wagon-

london calling (I like it but it's more of an obligatory entry cuz i prefer their eponymous debut)

devo - duty now...

declan macmanus - armed forces

....as well as a bunch of other shit already mentioned.

I suspect the folks who profess a great love for "Y" only know the CD which includes the "We Are All Prostitutes" and "She Is Beyond Good And Evil" singles as bonus tracks.

Those two singles are tremendous. Strip those away, however, and the original album is a mess. Yes, it explores ground where not many had adventured before, it's noisy and generally formless/boundless, which I guess qualifies as art. It's not something I ever feel the need to hear.

Radical. I love it too. The title tune is one of my favorite instrumentals ever and Safe as Houses, Roots, Radicals, Rockers and Reggae, and Kicking Up A Racket are freakin' awesome. I may actually listen to Go for It, more now than I do Inflammable Material; but IM still wins by a nose.

My copy has "She Is Beyond" but not the other one. I don't think I've ever heard it, but I'd really like to. I think it's only available now as part of a singles comp which is probably import-only just like Y.

I also have the week of New Year's off, but that's from two floating holidays and a vacation day.
