Okay, executive decision time: Poll is officially off from today until January 2nd. I just found out I'm getting out at noon tomorrow. See you next year!

It has to be Three Imaginary Boys it's their fucking debut with songs like "Boys Don't Cry," "Grinding Halt," "Fire In Cairo," "Three Imaginary Boys" and "10:15 Saturday Night." That last song is one of my most played songs ever!

NOTE: SINGLES GOING STEADY IS A COMP SO DON'T VOTE FOR IT!

I'm not voting for it because Entertainment! is heads and shoulders above anything in 1979. Unknown Pleasures would be #2. That said, I'm tired of people calling Singles Going Steady a comp and saying it shouldn't be eligible for things like this.

The Buzzcocks formed in 1977. Singles Going Steady came out in 1979 and 14 out of 16 songs on it were not on any Buzzcocks album prior to it. It certainly isn't a career spanning best of album that would be unfair to compare to a single year release. Most of the songs were b-sides if I recall correctly. I think people get confused by this because it sure seems that most people seem to think that Singles is the essential Buzzcocks album and that they can stop after getting that album. To my ears, its not the best Buzzcocks album by any stretch.

How many years are those singles spanning? And before you jump on me and say that debuts take a lifetime to compose....over how much time was all that material recorded? That's the real distinction I make. If you're going into the studio with your best 2 songs at the time and making a single, that's a hell of a lot easier as an artist to capture than 11 songs in say, 2 months of tracking and mixing.

Let's see -- they formed in 1977 and Singles was released in September 1979 so at most, they were recorded over 33 months. Not to mention that they released three full studio albums over the same period plus other singles and bsides which weren't included on Singles. Most of the stuff on Singles were b-sides, stuff that didn't make the cut for the studio albums.

The Buzzcocks released a ton of singles whose A-sides and B-sides were not included on their studio albums. Let's not forget, "A Different Kind Of Tension" wasn't released until '79--concurrent with "Singles", and none of the "Tension" singles were included on "Going Steady--so-o-o-o-o, the "Singles" period spans only two proper studio records--"Another Music In A Different Kitchen" and "Love Bites".

The first album included songs from only one single: "I Don't Mind" (a-side) and "Autonomy" (b-side). Both tracks were included on "Going Steady".

The second album featured only one "single", "Ever Fallen In Love?/Just Lust".

The rest of "Going Steady" covers 6 non-LP singles:

Orgasm Addict/What Ever Happened To?
What Do I Get?/Oh Shit
Promises/Lipstick
Love You More/Noise Annoys
Harmony In My Head/Something's Gone Wrong Again
Everybody's Happy Nowadays/Why Can't I Touch It?

The songs from "Spiral Scratch"were only available on "Spiral Scratch".

Every song on "Singles.." was previously released as a single. There is nothing on the album that was unavaible elsewhere.

Thank you.

I'm going to make an album called Please Specify, and the name of the side project is going to be The Other Other.

Offhand, my favourites from that year include: Joe Jackson (I'm The Man and Look Sharp), Devo, Judas Priest, Scorpions...and I'm sure I'm missing something...

I wasn't claiming anything was unavailable via a single. Just saying that very few of the songs were available on another full length and given the short time frame in which they were all recorded, it has more in common with a regular album than the typical career spanning best of compilation.

I know you seem to be a fan of singles, I refuse to buy singles or eps (usually). I need length or I won't bother playing it.

:D :D :D

Fair enough.

One of the things I like about singles is that you can often get stuff that's unavailable on the albums--a reward for going out of your way to acquire the stuff. Greatest Hits comps and Singles comps are, in a way, cheating. There's no doubt that in the digital age, the single is obsolete and inconvenient. But in the vinyl age, you had to head up to the turntable to flip an album after four to six songs, so swapping singles wasn't much more of an imposition.

Picture sleeves still rule, though.
