Though I like Soft Bulletin best, In A Priest Driven Ambulance is one of the greatest album titles ever.

speaking of closing tracks, "Slow Nerve Action"

I think I might have cried the first time I heard that.

and "This Here Giraffe" is their best song.

My favorite Lips album because of this song. I was eating animal crakers last weekend and had just bitten into a giraffe when my rock-clueless fiancee began singing the chorus to this song. I think she's been getting into my cds while I'm gone...and that's awesome.

all of you are wrong. Clouds Taste Metallic is solid from beginning to end. Not one clunker. Same goes for Transmissions, but CTM is stronger overall.

ladies & gentlemales,
i have have the pleasure of being bombarded by the FL's in the past 9 months or so and have heard HTDITFH, TFTSH, CTM, SB, & YBTPR as well as some of the earlier stuff as well as 2 of the Z cd's played together at 1nce.....
w/o a doubt this band is the most IMPORTANT band of our/there generation....
and i say this as an somewhat educated music person..
they are more important that nirvana, the white stripes, nin, any one from the rap/r&b scene any of those young white blues proteges that popped up in the past ten years and anyone else.
and the reason they are so important is b/c of this spiritual connected on acid type way coyne and the rest of the troupe have persued their vision...
i don't know if the rest of the world would ever call freaks brave but i know one is only a freak by choice when one is beyond brave.
with this all said, i have become addicted to CTM...ADDICTED!!!!
anywhere between 3 & 7 times a day.... while on the bus, sitting at home staring at the stereo, sitting at home staring at the stereo, eh hem, while on the phone, while i play my guitar...
i have been told that i play like i have been influenced or infused or assumed the souls of and not limited to sonic youth (very flattering), CCR (also very flattering), black sabbath, velvet underground....
and this is in songs not an all encompassing thing but anyway i would love to get my sound to sound as devilish and as holy at once as the lips do.
the CTM is orchestral, done in 1995. it is and album and a potential bunch of singles togther. the best album of the past 20 years...

Clouds taste Metallic is a great album. The Soft Bulletin is a cosmic experience. Thanks for playing.

hey frizzleteaux & whine,
dude in no way did i suggest that the lips (well, steve was a massive herion addict, self-confessed) were drug users for the purpose of making music.
to the rest, Fn'W you can read on too....
secondly,
the music is MOrE than a lil' bit o' distortion.
its layered so thought provokingly,
i mean if someone cried when they heard slow nerve action,
this album is bound to spin your emotions right back to a lifelong epiphany. it is beatuiful. i'm just dumb founded by normal dudes with so much vision and ambition.....
or maybe better so much lack of regard for failure or self-conscoiussness. its just my opinion, its bound to be subjective,
but i got great fuckin' taste if it is a little bit vulnerable due to the fact i have not heard every album laid down on planet earth.
i'm like 1 a those texas business men at an art show who likes a painting where they go,
"Honey, i may not know shit about art but i do know what i like."
merry christmas everybody!!!!!!

I'm pretty certain no music has ever induced a lifelong epiphany in me. Pretty sure nothing has, actually. But, hey, if some really well-done tunes have changed your very being, more power to ya.

Soft Bulletin is my Number 1 album of ALL TIME. It's got everything I need in music. Relatable lyrics, trippyness, a "cosmic experience", upbeat music with dark subject matter, excellent production, originality, a little noise.... I could go on.
Clouds Taste Metallic is my 2nd favorite album by the Lips, and it is a GREAT record, but for me, Soft Bulletin is it.

EDIT: So, I've finally spent adequate time with In A Priest Drive Ambulance and it's taken over Clouds as my 2nd favorite Lips record. Damn good stuff. "Rainin' Babies" is a fucking classic.

Have you discovered Legendary Pink Dots yet? Maria Dimension/Crushed Velvet Apocalypse, but especially Four Days/Shadow Weaver/Malachai are good places to start. Poi Poka Mozhesh/Legendary Pink Box are good compilations.

I just wasted my time reading through this whole thread and NOT ONE PERSON MENTIONED THAT IN A PRIEST DRIVEN AMBULANCE IS FAR AND AWAY THEIR BEST ALBUM. None of the others even attempt to compare.

That said, Soft Bulletin is one of the worst albums I've ever heard. And I'm not just saying that to go against the masses...I truly believe it...and I've heard some shitty albums in my life. Why people like that is something I will never understand. I don't even think I've ever been able to make it all the way through.
