My ol' lady hooked me up with a $100 gift certificate from Tiger Direct, and I need an external. Don't really need more than 120GB (no video), but I like Firewire. Anybody have this one?

Mines a Western Digital 120GB. No firewire (USB2), but I've not had any problems. In fact I think I'm about to get another one to back this one up.

that one you've got linked there looks fine though.

I have a first gen. 120 GB Maxtor OneTouch and the only problem I have is a partition that craps out on me…sometimes. I've been happy with it, but I have read of other consumers who had oddball crashes and deaths of the same drives. I just have all my garbage files (music, random video, tubgirl pictures) on it, so I don't use the OneTouch backup feature. I also use USB, not FireWire, but I have no problems with transfer speed. This also looks like a refurb model, but I don't know how you feel abou that.

I also have a Maxtor 120 GB internal drive that's given me no problems in the three years or so I've had it.

Good god. That's less than I paid for my 120 when I got it.

I have the same one and I've been happy with it so far, but it's never on so I don't know how noisy it is.

It's cheaper to just get an internal IDE and a US$40 external case (empty).

I, myself, have a Maxtor (not the same one you linked) and a Western Digital, and they've both worked fine.

If you're going to keep it on all the time, make sure your case has a fan.
