This is a pretty good move, although expensive. But since the Red Sox are Pepsi to the Yankees' Coke, money doesn't really matter. Renteria is a good defensive and (barring 2004) offensive shortstop.

actually, the talk is that a trade is in the works for Burnett, which might be a pretext to trading for Hudson. i don't claim to completely understand the mechanics of that particular idea.
