This grew on me-
Image

I soooo didn't like this album for awhile, and as I was listening to it this morning, it just hit me.

This lost me:
Image

At first, I was blown away... after awhile it just didn't do it for me anymore. Quite disappointed. I thought it would be in my top 20, but nope.

Any others?

Lost me to the point of wanting to sell it back, and Animal Collective made a conceptually similar record, and blew this one out of the water:

Coincidentally I'm listening to Medulla (on headphones) at my desk right now. Got to agree with pumachik that it hasn't grown on me yet. I just can't get used to the throat singing. I keep hoping that if I listen to it enough something will click. :?

Also Van Lear Rose hasn't grabbed me. I just don't get why its been so well received. Is it just the novelty album of the year or did some of the indie luster of Jack White just rub off on Loretta?

i think that it was the onion that described Medulla as being best appreciated from afar. i still want to hear that pinback album.

Oh and I'm going to state the obvious:
Image

Lost me. As much as I heart Modest Mouse, and there's a few tracks that I really dig on the album... but it doesn't do it for me anymore. It ain't no Lonesome or Moon. Shouldn't it be called "Bad News for People Who Love Modest Mouse?"

Good calls on Panda Bear and AC Newman losing you... I wholeheartedly agree.

Speaking for myself, I really like country music, and the grittier sound lends Loretta a, for lack of a better phrase "more authentic"reading. The song writinig is top notch, and Portland, OR is a balls out rocker.

I actually think the opposite of "Jack White's luster" is true. I think a lot of people dismiss this b/c of the White presence and tend to think its a gimmick.

Nothing this year has really worn of on me, but I cannot seem to get on the lo-fi folk bandwgon. Iron and Wine and Devendra Banhardt just have not stoked my interest at all.

Gritty alt-country = good, but you must admit - she's no Lucinda Williams.

Also I agree with you on Devandra Banhart, Senator. I picked up Nino Rojos and, while not unpleasant, I'm finding it a little snooze-worthy. When I'm in the mood for Nick Drake, I'm also in the mood for Banhart, although I do find him a little less melancholy than Drake.

Sufjan Stevens made the best "folk" record this year.

Amoeba Music or on-line. Other Music has it.

I couldn't agree more about Medulla. The year's biggest disappointment for me outside of the Magnolia Electric Co. show here.

I know it might seem petty, but "Bukowski"'s Elliott Smithisms/Semi-rapping and the ludicrousness of "Dance Hall" almost ruin this album for me by themselves...

That's exactly what it was! The more and more I listened to it. I don't care what anyone says, Float On is a great single (even though the radio plays it 1 million times a day) and I REALLY like Bury Me With It. But, that's it. It's a bummer.

Are you serious?

Maybe Loretta doesn't have the indie cred, but she's a living legend of country music.

Lucinda's good and all, but there's no doubt that the history books are gonna have a much bigger entry under Loretta Lynn than Lucinda Williams.

I agree, I think Van Lear Rose is awesome. Mind you I don't even like that White Stripes band. Lucinda is obviously good, but comparing Loretta to her is like comparing Brian Wilson to Sean O'Hagan or something.

MCaputo-I whole heartedly agree about Jim White, although I liked it from the get go, it is a top 10 er for sure. I was disapointed in some songs on "No Such Place". This one is as consistent a "Wrong Eyed Jesus", and I was skeptical when I saw that the Barenaked Ladies were somehow involved.

You know, I saw them in concert a couple of months ago (and only because I got a free ticket) and I enjoyed the new tracks live- but I'm not too thrilled on the new album.

And Dalen- okay you're UN-fired. :D
