Motherf'er, goddamn shitsandwich-eating sum of a bitch bastard...I just spent 5 minutes typing this list out and hit one wrong key and it disappeared... :nutkick:

I'll come back and post it later when I'm less pissed off.

That happens all the time with me and my laptop...it overheats and *bang* I lose what I was working on.

Cut and paste much?

Man, I always look forward to year end lists and then end up disappointed that everyone pretty much has the same thing.

(i.e. Andrew Bird and his Mysterious Eggs, Animal Collective, MIA...yawn fest)

edit: I stand corrected. That list posted is pretty different from what I've seen.

I bought that Mary Gauthier today and I love it more with each listen.

Tentoze slipped it my way a while ago, but it didn't quite stick until I was relistening to his post-Katrina mix that has "Empty Spaces" on it.

I popped that Bettye Lavette into a listening station at Tower today, but the samples I got just sounded too labored and forced. Anyone have a more complete take on it?

I still don't get the allure of My Morning Jacket.

PS: Thanks, Dr. O'Boogie.

I was typing, not cutting and pasting wiseass.

Anyway, none of those made the cut which is nice....very little duplication between ND's list and most others and its not diversity for the sake of diversity. While I haven't heard most of the list, I agree that 2 of the 3 I've heard from the top ten actually belong in the top 10.

I like it and it'll likely make my top ten. That said, if you don't already own a ton of soul, you're better off buying something from the 60's or early 70's.

I love some MMJ but don't get the allure of Z.

I should really hear these ones before I fill out my Shmoo poll. Doubt I will, though.

Nice to see some recognition for Amy Rigby's album on that ND list. She released that with virtually no fanfare whatsoever - and it might be the best thing she's done since Diary of a Mod Housewife.

For some reason I thought Son Volt would finish higher in No Depression. I accidently left it off my shmoo poll. Jet Pilot is the best song ever written about Bush/Iraq war.

Except that this is a specialized publication. Therefore of course this list will be different. Just as much as I'm sure a irish folk mag would be different. The fact that so many people have many of the same things on their lists attest to the fact that these albums got out to many people. Whether they are the best or not, thats to be seen, but the distribution worked and it clicked with enough people. I've been seeing this lately on the board here, that people are bashing lists because they have "mainstream independent releases" on them. Screw that. Look, me personally, I had over 100 albums to pick and choose from. Some were good some weren't. Yes, yes its all very good to go out and search out new music that is so under the radar it hurts, but you know what? Not everyone goes and mailorders the most obscure crap. Some of us find it easier to run up to a Borders or something like that and grab the new Animal Collective because we have a history with the band. Sorry to get all soapboxy but it just seems to me that for you to say the lists are "boring" is rather boring in and around itself.

I guess that's a bit surprising, although I haven't heard it myself. Ryan Adams at #16 too (although I think that album is really weak).

Its also pretty surprising to see Sleater Kinney, Kayne West and Lizz Wright make their list. Makes me think maybe I need to hear those.

We're talking about the list of critics though. They are supposed to educate us about the best out there, not spoonfeed us crap just cause it has more marketing behind it. They are getting paid to do that after all.

I dig that Amy Rigby too. She is underappreciated for her talent.

I'm not referring to these lists though. I completely agree with yr statement and agree that 99% of us are gonna question that stuff, but I was talking in reference to the shmoo polls that boarders did, and how they are coming under scrutiny and called "boring".

No surprise that this one comes closest to my top 20. I should probably give the Marty Stuart and Rodney Crowell disks a listen, but neither have ever done much for me in the past. Definitely would like to hear the Amy Rigby, Delbert McClinton, and Eliza Gilkyson ones. Hayes Carll's Little Rock didn't quite make my top 20, but was damned close, and is a great 2nd album.

Having Kanye on there is an abomination. Do much tokenism?

Just leave it off and keep your credibility.

Pretty nice list though. Reminds me of some stuff I still need to hear.

I've only heard one song, a remake of a fave Joan Armatrading tune of mine (Down To Zero). But she overdoes it, beating it into submission.

yea, I was gonna comment on this one too...I don't think I've seen a critic's list yet that doesn't have it thrown in there...never #1 and usually not any other hip-hop on the list

Its so far out of their ballywick that I have a hard time thinking that it was an intentional token hip hop pick. Same with Sleater Kinney.

I haven't heard either but I will say that their inclusion on this list makes me more curious. And I just ordered Mary Gauthier based on the #2 showing and high praise from a few boarders. If I'm thinking correctly someone (Bloor?) had recommended her in singer/songwriter thread I started a month or so ago too.
