I subscribe to RES magazine and with it comes a dvd compilation with short films, music videos, music, and other stuff (which is the same comp mentioned my circlesquare thread). I really dug the song/video for a couple of the featured artists and 'shadows' by wagon christ was one that grabbed me. I did some reading and listening via allmusic and picked the album during lunch today. I'm giving it a spin right now, but wondered if anyone had any comments on this album, etc?

I really like Luke Vibert/Wagon Christ, but for some reason I never got around to picking up this album. Even though you're right, that Shadows was one of the best songs of the summer.

I like it quite a bit. It's the first thing by them I've picked up, but it's a good blend of more uptempo and laid back stuff. Not sure if it's one of my favorites of the year, but it's absolutely something that I'll keep pulling out now and again. Fun disc with a little soul in the electronic mish mash.

That "Shadows" vid is pretty and accordingly ethereal. I like the album very much, but maybe not as much as Musipal.

I read some good stuff about WC as well, and decided to sample some tunes via soulseek, but they didnt really win me over....

Ditters. This album would go in my "dont have time/cash for in 2004" list.

Wagon Christ is just one person, Luke Vibert. He produces with his own name & under the alias Wagon Christ, Amen Andrews & Plug which he did 1 D+B album "Drum n Bass For Papa" which is really good & off the beaten path for D+B. If you get the US version it's a 2 disc set with a collection of prealbum vinyl only stuff that's better than the album. The album is dedicated to his dad who's a huge music fan & allegedly gave a struggling Jimi Hendrix a gig in the UK before he hit big, turned Luke onto Nine Inch Nails & wishes Luke would make music more like The Prodigy

Speaking of NIN, Trent Reznor is a fan & signed him to Nothing for his Plug album. Simon Reynolds is a huge fan too. In Generation Ecstacy he made a comment that on a certain days Luke is his favorite Electronica producer. As far as I know he's the only producer to do an album for the 4 big electronic labels, Astralwerks, Mo' Wax, Ninja Tune & Warp. 5 Years ago I was on that boat with Simon. I'm still a huge Luke fan, just not like I was.

I once got into a conversation with a friend & fellow Vibert fan & I commented that his music was like those read along books that you had as a kid. Those books that came with a tape that you would read along with & had different voices for each character & music & weird noises. For some reason a lot of his music just gives me that vibe & my friend agreed.

"Tally Ho!" is easily Luke's best WC album & I prefer "Throbbing Pouch" to "Sorry I Make You Lush" which is slightly better than "Musipal" to me was his weakest album to date. Another good album by him under his own name is "Big Soup" on Mo' Wax.

Image

He did an album with lap steel guitarist BJ Cole "Stop The Panic" which I feel is hit & miss. I guess it was BJ's idea. He went to David Toop & asked for a sampling of Electronica producers albums to listen to thinking of a possible collabaration project. Of the artists Toop picked out for him BJ picked Vibert & the rest is history.

After giving it a couple spins, I've come to the conclusion I really like parts of the album, but some of it is a bit too alienating. I'm really digging:

Saddic Gladdic
I'm Singing
Shadows
Nighty Night

It's hard to give an opinion or much detail since I've only heard it 2 or 3 times. I will say that 'Shadows' just kills me it's so freakin' good.

Thanks Damen for the info. :)
