1/19/06 - Fonotone Release Party feat. The Roan Mountain Hilltoppers @ The Earl, Atlanta. Had a blast, but was a little disappointed that two billed acts, Backwards Sam Firk and Joe Bussard himself, didn't play. It was cool getting to see Bussard in person, though, and they showed a documentary about him before hand which was also a lot of fun.

2/4/06 - Feist, Jason Collett @ The Variety Playhouse, Atlanta. Solid show. More rockin' than I expected. She has a great voice. Jason Collett was kind of annoying.

2/22/06 - Ben Trickey @ The Earl. Ben is a good friend of mine, and this was his first *real* show at a *real* venue in Atlanta. He's a singer/songwriter and has a myspace page here. He was opening for two other bands that I didn't hang around to watch. He played a short set and sounded great but was very (understandably) nervous.

3/11/06 - Silver Jews, Spiritual Family Reunion @ The Earl. I was starstruck the whole time, finally seeing Berman in person with Bob Nostanovich and Steve West in tow (but not playing in his band except for a couple of songs where Bob drummed). West was working the sound boards. Berman was in great form and said a lot of funny shit, but he had to read his lyrics out of a notebook. He said they were "still learning the songs" and would improve and come back later. Also, his wife Cassie is pretty hot. SFR was a pretty damn good opener, and I might have bought a CD if they'd had one to sell.

3/14/06 - Racebannon, Gospel, Mass Movement of the Moth, Wayward @ "The Historic iDefy House", Atlanta. So all these bands were playing at a little house in Home Park, and I was worried - with good reason - about how it would turn out. Well, the room they were playing was tiny (I've got more space in my apartment), and the sound was pretty bad since there was of course no sound board. You couldn't really hear the vocals much with any of the bands, but they all performed really well. The first two were really good, and then Gospel was excellent. And then there was Racebannon, the band I've been wanting to see for years. They were fucking kicking ass, nearly through their 3rd or 4th song when a dude ran in and told them they had to stop playing. Fucking cops came by and shut the thing down.

3/19/06 - Animal Collective, Nix Noltes @ The Variety Playhouse. Missed all but the last two songs of Nix Noltes, but the last one was great. I'll have to check them out further. Animal Collective was partly great and partly tedious, just like the last time I saw them. They played a whole bunch of new stuff, a lot of it very droney and slow with about 4 songs from Feels and "We Tigers" as a closer. That song was fucking awesome live as were "Grass" and "Purple Bottle".

4/9/06 - Cory Branan, Ben Trickey @ The Earl. Went to see Ben play his second show at the Earl. He's got a decent little following there. I stayed for some of Branan's set which was pretty good.

8/1/06 - Tom Waits @ The Tabernacle, Atlanta. Really amazing show. All of my expectations were met and many were exceeded. I was surprised at what an energetic performer he was and how great his voice sounded.

8/28/06 - Shellac, Uzeda @ The 40 Watt Club, Athens. Uzeda played an instrumental set because their singer was "sick". I was seriously impressed by them. How the fuck did 3 middle-aged Italian guys end up making music like that? I bought their most recent CD based on the show, but I was totally put off by the (female) vocals when I heard it. Anyway... Shellac was cool. They were pretty rough at first, but I was impressed with how well Steve Albini could reproduce his guitar sound in a live setting. The much looser and less proficient than Uzeda, but towards the end of their set (they played about an hour-and-a-half), they got tighter and more into it. Albini actually seemed to be enjoying himself a little. And everybody made fun of the drummer's "blouse".

10/19/06 - Man Man @ The Drunken Unicorn, Atlanta. THESE GUYS ARE THE BEST BAND OUT THERE. PERIOD. I saw Tom Waits this year, but I swear THIS WAS BETTER. So much fun. So much energy and enthusiasm, and they can fucking play. And pretty much all of them sing. Do not miss this band.

11/16/06 - Califone, The Judy Green @ The Earl. I though Califone put on a good show. "Pink & Sour" was really beefed up live, and I thought it was pretty awesome. I don't really get why people put down their live show unless they just find it boring.
