Charlie Brown, duh.

After hearing "Young Blood" while digging through the stacks of used records today, I'm throwing an Obner shout-out to Li'l Pookie, Ray-Ray and the goofy yet talented R&B/Doo-Wop group of the 50s—The Coasters.

Image

I used to have the Atlantic Records R&B 1947-1974 Boxset with a bunch of old Coasters songs on it. While I know that 50s vocal groups ain't exactly a big priority for me or less still for most of you too cool for school Obnish, there's some easy to digest, good fun music here that's been covered by the The Beatles (five times!), Bad Company, Jerry Lee Lewis, Paul Revere and the Raiders and Ry Cooder.

I didn't even realize that "Three Cool Cats" from Cooder's Chavez Ravine was originally recorded by The Coasters and written by Lieber/Stoller, who provided them with most of their material.

"Yakety Yak" Parents are harshing my gig!
"Charlie Brown" School is a drag!
"Little Egypt" Strippers!
"Young Blood" Fifteen will get you twenty!
"Poison Ivy" Avoid the clap!

There's also "Searchin'" and then… "Along Came Jones", just off the top of my head. Good stuff, Obner people. It may not be as experimental as that hot new three piece with no guitarist and two flautists from Psoriasis Records, but it's good damn fun and it's performed well.

Back to your regularly (sparsely) scheduled New Year's Eve programming.

I love oldies, and the Coasters are up there. So much great music from that period. What sucks is the Oldies radio stations seemed to have generally moved to a '60s and '70s focus, so all that great '50s music never gets played anymore.

I love the Capris track that was on the John Peel Fabriclive compilation ('There's A Moon Out Tonight').

I don't have the money to buy unusual records any more unfortunately but if I did I'd have more of this sort of thing.

Good song. Joe Jones "You Talk Too Much" is great, too.

And I can guarantee that ninjas like L'il POOKY and Ray-Ray could outmonger the dudes we put in the pantheon. Hell, these dudes probably taught Chuck Berry and Ike Turner what beat a bitch, jail and stabbin homeless people was all about.
Love the music, too

on Beatles Anthology v1, there is a version of "3 Cool Cats" as well as another Leiber/Stoller song, "Searchin'".
