Hey all,

Now that it's the new year, I need to buy a new bed for the first time. Any suggestions on what I should expect for a price range on a new queen-sized frame, box springs, and mattress?

Any suggestions for this bachelor-to-be?

Also, where should I go to post how awesome New Year's Eve was, how drunk I got, and how I am still deaf from the killer Golden Falcons concert?

Oh shit, that's a good idea. You think Costco has beds too?

They definitely do.......we considered buying one there but ended up going with something different based on personal preference...

I would caution against one of those beds that leaves your imprint long after you move. I've slept on one of these over the holidays and hated it. If you sleep on your back for a while, you can't move to another position because the depression of your ass is still in the mattress.

They advise you to lay (lie) on a mattress for a half hour when trying them out. Sounds like a good excuse for a public nap.

Good luck.

they sell all sizes of beds, although a particular design might not be available in all sizes, but should, unless you are looking for a bunk bed or kids bed.

they use wood slats underneath the mattress so the bed looks less bulky.
From a desginer standpoint this looks best.

(Edit: I like the wood instead of a box springs because it makes for a more firm sleep especially with my bad back.)

I love ikea, but the closest one is in Houston. I'd have to rent a van, drive there, and then see if they had something I wanted . . . not certain if it would be worth it, but as we are talking about Ikea, I'll seriously consider this. I also need a couch, as she took the love seat. I also need new art, as most of ours was Laura's art . . . got to see if I can talk her out of a few of my favorite pieces . . .

Well driving al the way to Houston might not be worth it, but it usually comes in small enough pieces that you don't need a van, unless you get the mattress there too.

We bought a sweet loveseat which is only slightly smaller than a couch at world market for less than $500.
I think they were having an even bigger sale last week that could still be going on.

Well, I drive a 1969 VW Bug, so I probably would have to rent a van . . .

that actually looks pretty ill. i'm not quite about to give up a bed, but intriguing nonetheless.

Any bed that is labeled a 'platform bed' will not need a box spring. That's the style that Ikea sells that Timmyjoe is talking about. I have a platform bed and love the low profile it has. I found it at www.furnitureonline.com which also had the best price for the bed I wanted.
I also bought a new mattress last April. I figured that since I will spend a good 25% of my life sleeping, I could justify dropping a bit more money on a mattress that I really liked (Yay, credit!). I had been sleeping on a 23-year-old polyfoam mattress from Sears, and it was horrible. I ended up buying a latex foam mattress from www.flobeds.com and I love it. Doesn't make any noise or create pressure points like a spring mattress, completely conforms to your body shape without lasting impressions like memory foam, and super-supportive without being too firm. So be sure to check out your options besides traditional spring mattresses. I haven't slept this well in a long time.

Haha, Flip 'n' Fucks. My wife had pillow furniture in college and we called them Flip 'n' Fucks because of their ability to open up into a little bed and transform back to a chair. Regardless, sorry to hear about the sleeping situation I'm only laughing at the memory of those god damn chairs.

Haha! You use the term Flip n' Fuck too! Though we use it in reference to those little foam chairs that unfold into a single-size pad... those things with no frames at all.

According to the infomercials, Craftmatic beds are 56% cheaper than the industry leading beds.

You don't want her artwork around to remind you of stuff.

Ikea ships, shop online.
