A friend of mine burned Love Is Hell for me, and as I liked the Replacements-like sound of that, I sought out more. I picked up Ryan Adams & The Cardinals' Jacksonville City Nights today, and it's frickin' country!

Does this guy normally jump all over the style map? What are other discs by him that aren't country?

Nah, stay away from love is Hell and Rock n Roll. They were Adams trying something a little different. And in my opinion, different wasn't done well.

Cold Roses and Jacksonville City Nights are more in tune to who he is musically, they go back more to what he was with Whiskeytown.

He put out the album We Are Fuck You/Punk's Dead Let's Fuck with some guys, calling themselves The Finger.

Also not country.

I actually liked Love is Hell, which was supposed to be his mopey Smiths album. The one that really stands outside his other releases in Rock and Roll, which I've never really warmed up to. It sounds forced and unnatural, like a guy who's trying to prove he can do that kind of album. It just wasn't terribly believable for me. I've never heard some of his punk stuff, but I'll wager it won't sound valid to my ears. Most of his other work veers towards Replacements/Gram Parsons type music, for lack of a better description.

My personal ranking of his work would be:

Gold
Heartbreaker
Cold Roses
Love is Hell
Jacksonville City Lights
29
Demolition
Rock and Roll

I rank them thusly

Jacksonville
Gold
Heartbreaker
Cold Roses
...everything else

JCN is about as close as he's gotten to recreating Whiskeytown, which is a good think. Even though I dont like 29 very much, I think he has to be considered for artist of the year by any criteria. The guy writes better songs whilst taking a dump than most do otherwise.

Well since Finch wants the stuff that's not too country, that would be Gold, Demolition, Rock N Roll and the final Whiskeytown album, Pneumonia (which I would say is the best of these four).

Every time I hear R&R, it sounds hollow to me. I don't hate it really, there are some good songs, but I don't know. I dislike using this word, but it's akin to him posing or just taking on a role for this album. And if he is acting, it's a bad role. Maybe I believe in or appreciate his other work because it seems consistent with his usual output since Whiskeytown. And R&R is just his cocky example of him trying to prove he can put anything out and it will be great. So part of the lack of appreciation on my end may very well may have to do with his personality. He's one artist that I wish would just shut the fuck up. I really enjoy his music but prefer not to listen to him or read his interviews. I also realize the inconsistency in some of the above comments in that his prodigious output in 2005 (two of which are in my Top 20) could be an example of him demonstrating that he can put out anything he can and believing it's great. Because a lot of what he does is, in fact, pretty great.

Having said all of that, I haven't heard it in awhile and I'm probably due for another listen. Maybe this time I'll wake up and hear the rawk on it.

Rock N Roll is the only album of his I own.

I have Gold on my shopping list but RNR was the first to bring me into him. Truth be told, I'm like Finch where I'm not really that into his countryish stuff.

Seeing as how you're not either, Finch, I would easily say go with RNR next. Or check out a few tracks off it first, seeing as how a couple of people in this thread have already run it down.

This is mostly how I feel about all of his solo work. Its like he's always trying to emulate someone with it being Gram Parsons one minute and Paul Westerberg the next.

He never really carves out his own identity. He should work much more at crafting good songs rather than being so prodigious just for the sake of being prodigious. There's obviously some talent there, and I can enjoy his music as background music. But if I start really listening I always feel there's something lacking. The only song of his that I really like is Oh My Sweet Carolina, and that's due to Emmylou's participation as much as anything.

I like Whiskeytown a lot more than his solo work.

Thanks for the tips, guys. That really clears things up  Guess I should have paid more attention to the reviews I skipped over.

I'll take your (collective) advice next time I buy.

I think this says more about you, and the media-consuming public than it does him.
How many comedians are dying to do straight drama? How many country artists want to rock..etc.

I like the way the guy has basically found a way to write, record and release whatever he wants.

I think I am the only Rock N Roll fan on the board (maybe Bloor, Busty, the rest of my boys)

my stock answer for Ryan is "i can't wait for the greatest hits"

Even the most ardent Adams haters have to admit that Hardest Part is a fucking good song. That song is undeniable to me, and has become my favorite of the year. I'm not even wild about Jacksonville as an album.

I could write a dissertation on why I hate Gold. But I've enjoyed his 05 output more than anything since Heartbreaker and the Whiskeytown stuff. Having said that, I wouldn't recommend keeping up that pace.

I can't listen to R&R without playing spot-the-nick. It just sounds like a toss-off to me, and I guess it was according to his crazy-ass release schedule and battles with the label. But I can see where people would consider it a fun rock record.

I'm going to have to go ahead and disagree with you on that one, dude. The Stooges are monstrously good. I've listened to Raw Power twice this morning. It ain't garbage.
