So yesterday, in my continual pursuit of music nobody else cares about, on my way home from the dentist (six fillings all at once - I couldn't feel my face for 5 hours) I stopped in at some hole-in-the-wall used CD store that I've never seen before. The place was floor to ceiling CDs, barely organized, with aisles so narrow I had to shuffle through sideways. Most of the stacks were dedicated to all those bands mentioned in the "One Hit Wonders From the '90s" thread. You want ten copies of Loud Lucy or the Refreshments - I got you covered.

But the CD sleuth in me knew this place was a potential goldmine when I noticed the Divinyls and Crowded House were filed in their "punk" section. That's a sure tip-off the proprietor of the place doesn't have a clue about what he might have.

And sure enough, there it was:

Jerry Jerry And The Sons Of Rhythm Orchestra's Road Gore: The Band That Drank Too Much

It was their first album ('85), and it's always been rare enough on vinyl. I didn't even know they'd bothered to release it on CD. And $7.00 for it. So today I've got the punk/blues/gospel/fuckshitpiss of "Daddy Was A Peacock", "Gospel Surfer", and "Happy Nun" shaking the foundations of Chez Rads.

I also picked up:

The Auteurs New Wave (they also had Now I'm A Cowboy, but I've always been looking for NW)
The Honeydogs Everything, I Bet You

There was tons of other cool, long-deleted stuff in there. I've gotta go back with more time and a few trade-ins. And I just KNOW there's Game Theory Lolita Nation and Spoon Telephono somewhere in that mess o'shit.

Damn, I love places like that.

Uncle Monger is like the US Military of obscure JAIL ROCK -- He does it so you don't have to ;)

Those Jerry Jerry discs you sent me could get me 15 to Life is Alabama's finest knew I was regularly garring out to them on my bi-weekly treks up and down I-65.

That said, I need a 2006 monger package. Any chance of a Vol.2 of Power/Old/Slow Monger? I know you threw out 12343 bands I had never heard of in that 1979 thread.

There's a place in the suburb where I grew up that caters to the Barbara Streisand/Neil Diamond/broadway musical soundtrack baby boomer crowd, first and foremost. But they also have some rock stuff for the kids.

The place is ridiculously overpriced, but I almost never fail to find a gem in their Bargain: $5 and under bin. Over the years I have picked up:
Grant Hart - Intolerance (99¢)
Rev. Horton Heat - Full Custom Gospel Sounds (25¢ cassette, pre-release!)
Bob Mould - Workbook ($2)
and seen a number of other brilliant CDs in there that I would have bought, had I not already owned them.

I'm with you, Rads: God Bless 'Em!

So true. This is probably cliche by now, but I was in one shop, I think in Sudbury ON, where Sugar's File Under Easy Listening actually was filed in Adult Contemporary.

Totally love the cut out bins. I'm known to my friends as the "one most likely to find good stuff in what other people consider shit" guy. The used place in town here is the same way, no organization, etc. Always find good stuff there.

I had Lolita Nation on cassette since '87. It was getting thoroughly worn out so I recorded it into a Sound Forge wav file then burned it to CD from there. So now I have a CDR that sounds...uh...like a nearly twenty year-old cassette. Keep meaning to track down the actual CD.

Head back and grab that Now I'm A Cowboy. I like it a little more than New Wave even.

Auteurs = Best British band of the last 15 years.

I love the cut-out bins too. I love buying stuff because it's cheap.

I'd probably end up being happier if I spent more money and got stuff that I knew I'd like though.

I agree Now, I'm A Cowboy is probably my favorite by them. I knew Billy liked them but would have never have guessed that he thought they were the best for the last 15 years. Billy, did you ever get into Black Box Recorder? I bought one album but really didn't do much for me.

Half Price Books is always putting hard hitters in their bargain bins. That's where I found The Wrens' Secaucus.

Note that I said they were the best British Band of the last fifteen years. I know you dig lots of British acts from that period, I don't. I don't care for Black Box Recorder much either. The singer just doesn't do it for me. I do dig Luke Haines' solo work though even if most of its not close to being on a par with the Auteurs.

I found both the Replacements' "Inconcerated" & BRMC's "Screaming Gun" promo EP's for $5 each at a local store that normally waaaay overcharges for stuff.

I'm the dumb one??

Yeh. And dumber by the post.

Let me walk you through it. I didn't want to bother responding to your first attempt at dental humor because the truth is deadly boring, but you continue to insist on mistaking fillings for massive correctional oral surgery, so here you go: they're replacement fillings, and I got them all done before year-end so the cost could be deducted from my '05 dental plan instead of '06.

But I urge you to keep on with the funny, 'cuz the law of averages says that eventually even the stone stupid might stumble upon a semblance of wit.

Tell the truth. You had all your teeth pulled because they were rotten.

If you think you've got a particular strategy for trying to peg down Rads, it's not bound to be a successful one. Welcome to the board anyway.
